It just struck me that if a 9.0 quake struck in that area, the landslide in the Canary Islands that is suppose to wipe out the US east coast should have made it's move, huh?

Not close enough; also, the crack in the Canaries may be of more recent origin. At least one section of the ocean floor near the Azores (which is also some distance from the Canaries) has varied as much as a quarter mile elevation during the past 100 or 150 years.
