so-called campaign finance "reform" law has had the potential to shut down much Internet political discussion, by treating favorable comments about a candidate as "contributions" subject to regulation.
It's not necessarily politic to say so, but IMHO that issue is the real deal when it comes to the confirmation of Alito to SCOTUS. I'd have far more hope in a Justice Alito than in a Justice Miers on that score.

Regulation of campaign finance should be seen to be unconstitutional, root and branch. Not merely McCain-Feingold, but the whole concept, and "reform" laws dating back to the Nixon era.

Posting this here on FR is akin to "preaching to the choir". (Or, in this case, to the already-hardened combat troops...)

I'm not hinting that you should not have posted it; in fact, the truism, "Forewarned is forearmed" comes to mind.

Basically, I'm pointing out that I consider FReepers to be the front-line shock troops in this battle...
