Law to make Wal-Mart raise benefits
Knoxville News Sentinel ^ | 3/8/6 | REBECCA FERRAR

Posted on 03/08/2006 7:14:48 PM PST by SmithL

State Sen. Tim Burchett has introduced legislation to ensure that Wal-Mart provides health insurance to its employees.

"It requires folks that have over 10,000 employees to provide some health insurance for their employees," the Knoxville Republican said Wednesday.

The 10,000 benchmark makes the bill apply primarily to Wal-Mart. While some other companies may have that many employees, they do provide health insurance, Burchett said.

He said Wal-Mart has used TennCare, the state’s health insurance program for the poor and uninsured, as a source to provide insurance to its employees.

"Wal-Mart has used the state’s TennCare health insurance program as a dumping ground," Burchett said. "All we want is for them to pay their fair share. That’s not a lot to ask."

The bill calls for a new Fair Share Health Care Fund to be set up. Employers that qualify under this bill — companies that do not spend at least 8 percent of their total payroll on health insurance costs — would pay to the state an amount equal to the difference between 8 percent of their total pay roll in Tennessee and the actual amount spent in the previous year for health insurance costs for employees in Tennessee.

Easy way around this: Wal-Mart could just fire all of its employees and then hire contract workers or temps from temp agencies that employ 9,999 statewide.

TIM BURCHETT = IDIOT

Uh, and the judiciary. And criminal justice. And taxes. And....

Oh, sorry. You're probably one of those "not-a-dime's-worth-of-difference" Democrats who can't stomach your own party anymore but you just can't bring yourself to vote Republican because nobody in your family ever did, and so now you're a "libertarian". Am I right?

Exactly, and who will this bill hurt?

The poor people the Dem's claim to be helping as Walmart will maintain it's 3-4 percent profit margin no matter what, so when costs go up jobs go down.

Wal Mart needs to play hardball and nip this socialist s**t in the bud!

Just issue a press statement...
The instant that the law is passed every wal mart employee in the state is out of a job...and if the law is then repealed they all go back to work.

Now another lesser company could not do something like that...but wal mart could.

If they make them do that, they should be allowed to reduce the wage to as low an hour as it needs to be to pay for it.
