From the Senate U.S. Senator Sam Brownback will be speaking at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference this weekend. Before he does, he’ll talk to Tony about a host of issues - - including the killed ports deal and the South Dakota abortion legislation.

Sensible Immigration Reform There’s been a lot of grandstanding on both sides of the immigration debate. Someone who has a common sense solution approach to the issue is Newt Gingrich. He joins Tony.

The "Other" Port Deal
The JOURNAL of COMMERCE ONLINE ^ | Fri Jul 29, 2005 | Bruce Barnard

Posted on 03/10/2006 6:46:55 AM PST by gov_bean_ counter

LONDON -- European Union regulators today approved A.P. Moller-Maersk's $2.8 billion takeover of P&O Nedlloyd (schedules).

In return, Copenhagen-based Maersk has agreed to sell P&O Nedlloyd's Europe-South Africa operations and withdraw the Dutch carrier from several liner conferences and consortia.

The European Commission, the EU's executive agency, said it was particularly concerned about the impact of the merger on the transport of refrigerated products from South Africa to Europe where the two merging carriers have a market share of more than 50 percent.

(Excerpt) Read more at caribbeanshipping.com ...

And first post on that thread:

While security concerns are legitimate issues, apparently, these were not at the top of Chuckie Schumer's concerns.
In 2000 the NY/NJ Port Authority gave Maersk something in the neighborhood of $600 million in concessions along with the promise to make them the hub provider in exchange for not moving their terminal business elsewhere.

In addition in 2000 Congress approved 1.7 billion dollars in port upgrades to accommodate this one company.

It was late last night when I ran across this and thought the merger was consumated recently, when in fact it was an official name change that has happened in the past month.

Make of this what you will. IMO, it stinks that the MSM can't dig into an issue and get the whole story out.

(Glad you realized my comment was not meant for you alone.)

I admit limiting donations to the state or national party. Instead, I'm giving more to indivisuals. There are plenty of ways to make my views loud and clear to both activists and office holders. I do that, and I'm not alone.

Just as people on FR are upset, so are activists. We have to hold our side accountable to us and responsible for voting on issues that are important. I cannot be responsible for others, but I sure can take an active part in candidates and office holders who I've been voting for and supporting. The biggest failure on the port deal was the White House not actively explaining what was going on, followed by the knee jerk reactions of some Republicans who responded before thinking it through.

Some of the best reporting from Iraq lately was done by Laura Ingraham. I also think she learned a lot about our military, how they operate, and how they think. She was always a great supporter of the military, but I don't think that until now she really understood them. Her reporting was fantastic, but the MSM will ignore her. She got some time from FNC but not much else

From another thread.

An American company got beat out of the sell by P&O by DP World and because Eller couldn't win in the court of law, they simply lobbyied Warner who said he would look into it. That wasn't enough so he went to Schumer who made hay.

The bottom line is this was a business deal UNDERCUT by a competitor of DP World. This was purely a lobbyist play by Eller. If, in the end they get this deal, there should be a serious examination of the money trail from Eller to Schumer, Clinton, et al.

Those are amazing numbers. 120 bills passed out of 12,000 submitted is a lot of work for nothing, don't you think?

I believe that we should make it a law that before any new law is passed, two laws have to be stricken from the Legal Code. Progress through elimination!

It sounds like you did a great job Truthy. A really great job, I salute you.

The danger of the constant negativity of the old media is that it does start infiltrating people's subconscious. It's insidious. And folks who normally are rational, clear-headed and based on facts, start shifting their thinking without even realizing it.

You fought the good fight, congratulations. But as this tired pajama warrior agrees, it'd be easier if the Adminstration would just help us fight a little bit.

Of course, that doesn't mean I'll ever quit. Not till my last dying breath will I stop fighting against these communist-loving, anti-American socialist-marxists and their lies.

And 1 more:

Deal gives Dubai firm control of 23 U.S. ports - Eller lobbied Schumer - Causing this uproar
Buffalo News ^ | 3/4/2006 | Douglas Turner

Posted on 03/10/2006 7:37:43 AM PST by Solson

WASHINGTON - A Dubai-owned company will control 23 American ports - not six - as a result of the deal approved by a Bush administration panel in January.

The takeover of the British company Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co. involves almost every major Atlantic seaport from Portland, Maine, to Miami and along the entire Gulf Coast, according to an attorney fighting the deal.

The list includes Port Arthur and Beaumont, Texas, which have handled about 40 percent of the war materiel the Army has shipped to combat theaters in Iraq and Afghanistan.

It also includes Norfolk, Va., home to most of the U.S. Navy's Atlantic fleet, along with three seaports in Louisiana that handle massive shipments of crude oil.

In the spreading controversy, it was known that the British firm being bought by Dubai Ports World runs operations at New York, New Jersey, Baltimore, New Orleans, Miami and Philadelphia.

Attorney Joseph Muldoon III represents Eller & Co., a Miami-based shipping firm that is fighting the transaction here and in Britain's highest court.

In an interview, the attorney said Eller & Co. does not want to become an unwilling partner of DP World's Miami operations.

Muldoon told The News he unsuccessfully appealed two months ago to Sen. John Warner, R-Va., whom he knows personally, and also saw staff members for Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, to stop the sale on national security grounds.

"I'll check it out," Muldoon quoted Warner as responding.

"Finally, I went to Sen. [Charles E.] Schumer because he is a member of the Senate Banking Committee, which oversees the Treasury Department board which approved this thing. If this hadn't been for Sen. Schumer," Muldoon said in an interview, "this issue would never had gotten any traction.

"My client, and I personally, believe that the seaports of this country should not be run by a foreign government," Muldoon said.

He said claims by the Bush administration that security is not involved is a myth.

"The port operator is the one who lays out the security plan," he said, "and the Coast Guard and other government operations follow suit."

In London, Eller & Co. attorneys have been given the right to appeal the deal by Britain's highest court. It was not until Muldoon called Schumer's office three weeks ago that it bloomed into an issue that threatens the president's hold on Republican majorities in the House and Senate.

"I had an instinct about this situation," Schumer said, "and it was to keep it as bipartisan as possible. So I went first to [Sen. Tom] Coburn [R-Okla.] and he was very concerned."

Muldoon said "Schumer was hanging out there all alone on it until" Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., announced his opposition. King is chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee.

Both national and statewide polls indicate the planned takeover of operations of American ports has helped plunge Bush to the lowest ratings of his presidency.

A New York poll done by the Republican-oriented Strategic Vision LLC gives Bush an overall approval rating of 24 percent. National polls have Bush at between 36 and 39 percent.

In the state survey, 81 percent of respondents think an act of terrorism is more likely if the Dubai ports deal goes through.

Although the Bush administration officially approved the deal Jan. 16, DP World, the company owned by rulers of the United Arab Emirates, has requested the United States conduct a 45-day review of the transaction in an effort to defuse opposition.

Schumer and King are sponsoring nearly identical bills that would empower Congress to block the deal if Congress is dissatisfied with the results of the review.

Rep. Thomas M. Reynolds, R-Clarence, was an early supporter of King's bill, which now has 97 co-sponsors. Backers include almost the entire state delegation.
Bureau assistant Sara Blumberg contributed to this article.

Disagree. There should be no pensions for Congress. They should utilize IRAs like most Americans. [Less incentive to do unscrupulous things to stay in congress and keep their pension.]

Your story is reminding me of the comic Ron White and his tale of commuter airplane flight:

PANICKY PASSENGER: "Well, how far do you think we can fly on one engine?"

WHITE: "All the way to the scene of the crash..."
