GOP Nears Deal on Immigration

Senate Republicans reached agreement last night on a compromise immigration measure that they believe will garner enough bipartisan support to break through a parliamentary impasse that has stymied progress on a high-stakes border security bill for two weeks.

Under the agreement, the Senate would allow undocumented workers a path to lawful employment and citizenship if they could prove -- through work stubs, utility bills or other documents -- that they have been in the country for five years. To attain citizenship, those immigrants would have to pay a $2,000 penalty, back taxes, learn English, undergo a criminal background check and remain working for 11 years.

Those who have been here a shorter time would have to return to one of 16 designated ports of entry, such as El Paso, Tex., and apply for a new form of temporary work visa for low-skilled and unskilled workers.

They are going in circles right now.

Supposedly the 'rats have the bill frozen so no changes can be made to it.

Republicans have said they will make changes to it.

Republicans have said they want it passed by Friday.

We shall see what happens. They are dazed and confused.

You should visit some of those immediate localities. In some places, the workers are wall to wall Hispanic. There is no white working class left at all, to speak of. The foremen are legal, the rest are mostly not.

To paraphrase Col. John Boyd, there is always opportunity to win on the ground you stand not from the ground you wish you had.

If this is the real deal, and it happens, it could be defacto deportation...if pressure is applied to the right people. It gives cowards a chance to hide and the harda$$es the tools needed to prevail. We've defined the objective, not we just need to track it like a heatseaker, not wallow in the defeatism of fickle idealists.

The more people the better - how else are we going to compete with China or India 50 years from now.

And you think that it is the staggering OVERpopulation of China and India that makes them potentially strong?

Either you forgot your sarcasm tag or you have put up what, IMO, is one of the dumber comments ever posted on this board.

I think I'll put mine on e-bay with you. The documdent fraud business is going to be booming here and in Mexico.

The sad part of all this is that illegals with only a 4th grade education are smarter than our congressmen.

What is a work stub?

That's what you buy from the counterfeiter down the street.

Amnesty under any other name is just as rotten. We have no funds for tracking people who outstay their "temporary visas." Moreover, the children of "temporary workers" are anchor babies, ensuring the American citizenship of their entire families. This "compromise" is a joke.

Why the hell do we have laws anyway, if they are not going to be enforced????

I've been trying to figure this out for years. Both our children are engaged to be married. We've suggested that they do NOT have children.

This country today bears no resemblance to what it was even 50 years ago when I was a boy. It's a shame...

There is a white black and hispanic working class. They're being displaced, moving away.

My point about the localities is the "cost" of getting workers is cheaper if you can pick them up off the corner rather than go to another city or state and advertise. I think things will be fine. I do think southwestern farming needs foreigners proven by the need to use them over many decades.

That would be one of those unregistered businesses. Profitable and tax-free.

They need not only to pass a law to get the illegals out of the country and seal the borders so no more illegals can get in, they need to have the plan well under way before election day so we know this isn't just more anti-illegal immigration law that they will simply ignore.

Or the 'rats jump into the driver's seat.

Shamnesty agreement alert.

there most certainly is a way to make a foolproof identity card for guest workers with a biometric. with current database technology, and the ability to access a central database from anywhere (any employer) via the internet - that part of this is easy - contract it out to VISA or AMEX, and they will deliver a solution.

they have to reduce the number of people they need to deal with - illegals with US citizen children should be first on the list to stay, the next group I would legalize are those who own homes and can produce actual deeds and property tax receipts. those two groups will make the best citizens anyway - family people and homeowners - so legalize them and be done with it.

you must crack down on the employers, to provide the incentive for the workers they are hiring to leave on their own - take away their jobs, if they have no ties to the US via property or US citizen children, they will be incentivized to leave.

and of course, you need border security to stop more illegal arrivals.

The spirit of anarchy is loose in France, and building here..

The stock market works on good graces of the investors, domestic peace works on the good graces of the people.. both can be decimated and fall into depression..

When the people have no voice and only certain people do, its everyone for himself.. When, Illegal citizens having more of a voice then actual citizens do will produce a "hard rain".. And it WILL fall.. Preparation is wise..

its because of low birth rates amongst americans, and abortions - that we got into this mess to begin with.

Here is another little angle. Is it possible that some of the folks in these localities prefer an Hispanic working class to a black one? That is a sleeper issue. Working class blacks are being forced out of due to economics, and moving away from, heavily Hispanic areas. In LA county, the most heavily black census tracks are now middle to upper middle class. Who would have imagined that 30 years ago?

Hopefully this is a jump the shark moment for the U.S. Senate. I hope they come to their senses before they sell us out.
