The Senate reached an extraordinary and fragile bipartisan agreement today on a sweeping overhaul of U.S. immigration law that would grant a chance to permanent residence for illegal immigrants who have been in the country longer than five years -- an estimated 7 million people.
[snip]
President Bush early today signed off on the compromise, as did the Republican and Democratic Senate leaders. It was reached after three days of intense negotiations that came about after the Senate had reached an impasse that threatened to kill any legislation for the year. A key player was Sen. Mel Martinez, a Florida Republican who also announced the agreement in Spanish in the Senate television gallery, a first.
"We've had a huge breakthrough" overnight, said Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn, told reporters today.

They say that it's impossible to round up all the immigrants to send them home. Well, if it's impossible to do that, then how is it possible to glean all of this longevity information from them. If we can find them to collect information, we can find them to send 'em home.
I posed the same question.
I don't know what the panic is about.. This silly "compromise" hasn't even come to the floor yet, there has been NO bill and NO amendments.. There ARE real good American members in the Senate. I am watching C-SPAN and waiting to watch. My one Senator is a stand up guy, and my representative is a trustable lady.
See my previous message, just above yours. I think the "Doble abajo." form works just fine. As you said, I erred in not providing a subject, although simply adding an exclamation point brought the verb out in Babelfish. I tested some other constructions to make sure.
My first attempt was designed to get something up. The second sentence was easy. I will be more careful in the future, though, to work on any Babelfish translations I submit to a thread.
"All show and no teeth and the sheeples will be happy."
We'll see whose happy in Nov.
I think that no bill is better than this bill, but Spector disagrees. He said that this bill is better than no bill.
Since there is no willingness to secure our borders, let's ask the Mexican government to screen out the terrorists entering illegally into Mexico with intentions to travel to the US.
Rotten traitors, these senators. They won't listen to the American people, but they can't give in to the Illegals fast enough. The whole lot of them that voted for this should be defeated.
What... about... BORDER ENFORCEMENT????!!!??? grrrrrrrrr
Certainly on the way to that. But first there will be plenty of payback to the Rs who sold us out.
Stay tuned for Amesty 2020 coming to a border near you.
"Dóble abajo" means "bend [something] down." What is the something you're referring to?
With respect to direct objects, verbs can be transitive, intransitive, reflexive, etc. In English, "to bend" is both transitive and intransitive. In Spanish, it is intransitive. It needs a direct object.
Therefore, "dóblese" includes the suffix that means "yourself," literally, bend yourself down.
"Doble abajo" is not proper Spanish, unless you mean "double underneath."
"Dóblese hacia abajo" [formal] or "dóblate pa' bajo" [informal] might be acceptable.
I'm sorry I got caught up on this grammar boring discourse, but I've been studying this for a while. I'm probably wrong :-)
Primary challengers to all Republicans who voted for this. This is nothing short of the abdication of ones honor to this country at the altar of money.
"Therefore, "dóblese" includes the suffix that means "yourself," literally, bend yourself down."
I bow to your logic. My Spanish is not based on formal study, but on a childhood growing up amidst Spanish speakers. What you say makes perfect sense, now that you explain it that way. Making the verb reflexive certainly does do the job, and would, no doubt be correct.
You do want to keep in in the informal sense though, since the entire expression has the tone of a superior giving orders to an inferior.
BOHICA is now translated into Spanish for whatever use one might want to make of it. [grin]
They are talking about a 5+ year plan in the typical Gooberment way. The Minutemen are NOW on the border, bravely, doing a job American Politicians won't do. I am thinking.. WHY NOT months and NOT years. The border can be secure in less than 90 days with volunteer labor. IMHO..
The Peace Core, for instance, can man the same safe positions that the MM are now manning. They or other volunteers can scatter razor wire in most of the border except for some additional crossing points which can be manned by Border Guards. Sadly, I fear this generation would not be able to win WWII..
Maybe the public could be energized to expend even half the dedication and effort that has been spent recovering from Katrina etc. The Goverment is usualy the problem, hardly ever the solution. (PS. send donations to the MM, they are the real "Greatest Generation".)
From his website: "Cornyn Votes Against Amnesty Proposal, Committee Immigration Bill
WASHINGTONU.S. Sen. John Cornyn, chairman of the Immigration and Border Security subcommittee, made the following statement Monday regarding his vote against final passage of a committee bill that included amnesty for millions of ..." at least one of our Senators is on message. I'm trying to find out what Kay Bailey did as well.
On my previous posts, I had it backwards.
