New York Population Loss Is Linked to Cost of Housing
New York Times ^ | April 20, 2006 | Sam Roberts

The 1990's exodus to other states from California and from the Northeast appears to have eased since 2000, but not in metropolitan New York, a Census Bureau analysis says.

The Midwest is still losing residents, and the West is gaining. The South remains a magnet for migrants, but the influx of new residents has declined steeply outside the South Atlantic region.

The analysis, which is being released today, looked only at people moving from one place to another in the United States and did not take into account people arriving from other countries.

We left Chappaqua about the same time the Clintons moved in. The property taxes on a nice house (4 bed, 2.5 bath) was $14,000 5 years ago...that is more than I spend on my mortgage in Pennsylvania...the taxes and cost of housing are outrageous

The South is a far freer, better place than the North. I was born in Illinois and lived in Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin before moving to Tennessee in 1987 and pesonally know whereof I speak.

I moved out of NY because of the twin savings-killers of housing costs and cost-of-living. Even on a six figure income you can't get into the market unless you already owned something before the price boom.

Our taxes in Putnam Valley on a nice 4br was $28,000 when we left in 2002. We are among the few who moved to NJ to lower our property taxes.

The property tax situation is outrageous. The price appreciation of the property can be negated by those high rates.

....people from other countries....

Those are IMMIGRANTS. I guess for the P.C. that's a dirty word. There's no mention of the 11 million ILLEGAL immigrants and where they are living.

Cost of housing seems to be a problem for New York, but not California? Hmmm, housing costs are VERY high in California.
San Francisco is growing....not shrinking and our housing costs are stupidly high.

I'm not sure the all facts are correct here.

The last time I was there, I saw enough "Kerry / Edwards" signs and bumperstickers to make me want to leave too.

Drive through North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. You hear everybody saying, "Where are all these people coming from? And where do they get all this money?" You see new construction, expensive make-overs, "gentrification", gated communities sprouting up in the most unlikely places--money! money! money! golf courses! golf courses! golf courses! movie stars! zillionaires! horses! yachts! private planes!

It's quite a shock.

From the article: "The analysis, which is being released today, looked only at people moving from one place to another in the United States and did not take into account people arriving from other countries."

This particular analysis was limited to the above. They're apparently looking at migration trends within the US.

And where do they get all this money?"

I've been asking that for 50 years. No one wants to tell me. :-)

Here's where they're moving:

Pike County is a county located in the state of Pennsylvania. As of 2000, the population is 46,302. Its county seat is Milford. Pike County is considered the most western edge of the Greater New York area surrounding New York City. Pike County is the fastest growing county in the state of Pennsylvania.

I think some of the money comes from the sale of their houses in New England, California, and the Midwest and some from the tax savings--but that doesn't explain much. Maybe it's just that rich folks have the wherewithall to locate the greenest pastures.

Exactly the reason I didn't re-locate in those states. Too many NYers. I moved over the mountains to get more bang for my pension buck. West Virginia IS almost heaven!

I was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. I loved my hometown and my state....however, I moved to Virginia with my Parents when I was sixteen.

Bottomline; It would take an act of God to get me to leave Virginia and return.
