First Group of N.Korean Refugees ‘Headed for U.S.’

Some five or six North Korean defectors are reportedly preparing to enter the U.S. under the protection of its embassy in a Southeast Asian country as Washington prepares to make good on a pledge to grant asylum to more refugees from the Stalinist country.

Sources in the U.S. government and Congress said Thursday as soon as procedural matters with the Asian country are resolved, the North Koreans will make their way to the U.S. Another official said the defectors are staying at a safe house in the U.S. legation in a Southeast Asian country but did not specify the country or the defectors’ identities for reasons of their safety.

Jay Lefkowitz, the U.S. special envoy for North Korean human rights, on Thursday told a House of Representatives hearing on North Korean human rights issues, “We will be in a position relatively soon to welcome North Korean refugees in the United States.” Lefkowitz said that there were anywhere between 20,000 and 50,000 North Koreans in northeastern China and the U.S. would make sure that friendly nations and allies in the region are clearly aware that the U.S. is ready to admit them and help them resettle in America.

The U.S. is expected to grant the defectors refugee status. There are currently some 200 North Korean defectors in Thailand, Cambodia and other Asian countries besides China, with 100 of them believed to be entering Mongolia every month, an official with an activist group for human rights in North Korea said.

Well, Bush is pressuring Hu to stop cracking down N. Korean refugees. Bush is now taking N. Korean refugees to U.S. in earnest. In N. Korea, food ration in the "privileged city" of Pyongyang stopped, creating serious anxiety among its citizens. Some are reportedly saying that they may have to "cross the (Chinese) border" to find food. The food ration system was reinstituted last year amid much fanfare, in an attempt to show that everything is back to "good old days" and state is firmly in control again. Up until that time, Pyongyang citizens had had to fend for themselves for several years since the outbreak of masive famine in mid 90's. Now vaunted state control broke down again.

Even with Chinese interference, refugee outflow from N. Korea could increase.

I'm glad we're taking these people in. This is what the U.S. immigration/refugee program is about.

This might well be a setup. There have been more than a few cases of fake seekers sanctuary. Perfect way to start cells in this country.

There's a big difference between an immigrant and an exile/refugee.

The refugee would go back home, if he could.

Re #5

Of course, N. Korea will try that angle. That is why enough number should be taken in. Once it goes over a thousand, the number of spies would be insignificant in comparison. Spies planted would do no good because the regime which benefit from them would be gone soon.

Just parachute bomb N. Korea with bags of rice and K rations by the millions of Tons.

It'll be cheaper in the long run.

" We cannot tolerate this humanitarian act of aggression," would say Kim Il Jung.

And he would retaliate with a massive Kim Chi Attack on Seoul.

Food bomb the peckahwoods anyway!

The large the number, the greater the number of spies. Even a few can do great damage as we surely learned from 911. It is dangerous to admit immigrants from enemy countries.

Sometimes even those from friendly countries turn out to be undesirables, such as the Shoe Bomber from England and that guy from Ukraine who went on a killing spree, having been admitted on fake sanctuary claims.

Queen Hillary will actively work to deport these refugees. Remember Ellian?

Let their spies come here. They've been fed such misinformation about the US that they will have their eyes opened. Perhaps some of the spies will even turn on their Communist masters.

"A crippling exodus from N.K."
For us or them? We have enough "refugees" already here. Let the Asian countries take them in. Or S.K. where they should go. We cannot take in everyone who wants to come here!

BTW, Why do we still have troops in S.K. 50 years after the War? The SKs have a very potent military and can take care of themselves.
Remove these troops and put them on our Border, not theirs!

South Korea has twice the population of the North and a first world economy and technology. The should deal with the North themselves. Definitely get our troops out of South Korea and Germany. Keep large important bases on reserve status, with no soldiers to be used when needed, remove the permanent presence from these countries. Fortify our border as well.

These people are fanatics and they hate us. Conversions are not likely. Some of the strongest anti-American zealots attended colleges here. Being in this country certainly did not sway the 9/11 terrorists. And they can do extensive harm. Besides, we do not need more people, especially those whose culture clashes with ours. We have enough problems.

SK now sees their own role as MODERATING between the US and SK --North Korea are their brothers, after all..

But not so brotherly that they would take in these northern brothers THEMSELVES.

So SK will permit the US take in defectors, and later, to defend South Korea.

I must say, that's a very nice arrangement.

The 911 hijackers didn't come from "enemy" countries.

Some of our very best citizens are those who have been forced to flee communism, to flee countries that are enemies of the US.

Now their kids born here are just as subject to becoming stupid liberal surrender junkies as are those of 6th generation Americans, but the original refugees from places like Warsaw-Pact era Poland, or Vietnam's Hmong, Castro's Cuba, already well-versed in the horrors of communism, turned out pretty good for opposing leftwing programs here in the states. That's one of the reasons the media hates Cubans so much- they know "progressive" aka communist Barbara Streisand when they see it.
