BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Sunni tribal leaders who have vowed to drive al Qaeda out of Iraq's most restive province met the Shi'ite premier on Wednesday, marking what Washington hopes will be a breakthrough alliance against militants. Sattar al-Buzayi, a Sunni sheikh from Anbar province who has emerged in recent weeks as a leader of a tribal alliance against Osama bin Laden's followers, said he and about 15 other sheikhs had offered their cooperation to Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.

"We agreed to cooperate," Buzayi told Reuters. "We haven't agreed to anything specific, but we agreed to cooperate."

If this is true, this is good news.

You didn't read the article. More of this article should have been posted.

Iraqi journalists for Reuters in Ramadi say another figure named Zuhair, seen as a key Qaeda militant and known locally as "The Butcher of Anbar", was killed by tribal gunmen in a car as he walked in one of Ramadi's main commercial streets on Monday.

More of the article should be posted for people to read and it should be Breaking News.

"Iraqi journalists for Reuters in Ramadi say another figure named Zuhair, seen as a key Qaeda militant and known locally as "The Butcher of Anbar", was killed by tribal gunmen in a car as he walked in one of Ramadi's main commercial streets on Monday.

"The United States says its 30,000 troops in Anbar -- by far the deadliest province for U.S. forces in Iraq -- cannot defeat the insurgency on their own. Senior commanders say they have been delighted by recent developments in Ramadi."

I have noticed unless people post the most important parts of the article in the body no one reads them and people ignore threads like this.

"More of the article should be posted for people to read and it should be Breaking News."

Agreed. The irony is that the "big news" centers around an intel report from several months ago, while news like this gets ignored by most people.

We should treat the 30,000 man tribal force like we did the Northern Alliance and go on the offensive massively with them now.

We have the chance to strike a fatal blow to the insurgency, we better not screw it up.

If we wait to act we very likely may blow our biggest opportunity in Iraq in years. Its only a matter of time before the Madhi Army does something horrific like butchering several hundred Sunnis that will make it politically impossible for the tribes to target fellow Sunnis while Sunnis are being butchered by Sadr's boys.

It's over for the "insurgents". These tribes are still extremly important in Iraqi life and if the tribes have joined the government, it's over. It's just a question of time. Al Qaeda thinks they are violent and barbaric? HA! Wait until the tribe get their hands on these guys. They'll be begging to be in a panty covered pyramid.

???

I have read it, but I must be missing a subtlety somewhere. Wouldn't this still be considered a step in the right direction?

Crapgame: Try making a DEAL!
Big Joe: What kind of DEAL?
Crapgame: A DEAL, deal! Maybe he's a Republican. You know, "Business is business."

Cut the Sunni's in for enough of the oil money, and they'll likely go along.
