The GOP's Twilight Zone (The swing state where the name Bush is not a negative)
National Journal ^ | September 28, 2006 | Chuck Todd

WASHINGTON — You're traveling through another dimension; a dimension not only of sight and sound, but of mind. It's a journey into a wondrous land where the surname Bush is glorious, and whose boundaries are that of imagination. That's the signpost up ahead -- your next stop, Florida.

Older readers will recognize the words above from the introduction to the hit TV show, "The Twilight Zone."

Believe it or not, there's a swing state in this country where the name Bush is not a negative. In fact, in this magical place, Republicans clamor to be seen next to this Bush. In primaries, candidates even argued over who is best able to carry on the Bush legacy.

In this place they call Florida, nearly as many Democrats approve of the way this Bush has handled his job as those who disapprove.

Of course, I speak of Florida Gov. Jeb Bush -- the most popular Republican in Florida now and, perhaps, in the state's history.

Florida? That should help Katherine Harris in November. It should rid the state of its last statewide Democratic officeholder and Bill Nelson is a LIBERAL.

No one or no thing could help Harris win that race.

I agree.

There have been some polls that show a narrowing of the race - but I can't recall how reliable any of those polls were.

Those pollls showing Katherine narrowing the gap are the GOP faithful, embarrassed by Katherine's antics, now deciding the "bite the bullet" and be loyal Republicans. For Katherine, getting 45% of the vote is a major accomplishment.

"There have been some polls that show a narrowing of the race "

Probably from being 75 points behind to 70 maybe?

she hasn't done anything.... puhleeze fellows, think about boxer, Feinstien, Mosley braun... Murray... any of the lib dem senators or legislators of national prominence.... Harris didn't kiss the right a## at the state level and was back stabbed by people that could have covered for her.

Don't tell me she's as weak as any of the democratic women now in office. If she's a flake... so what, she's a republican flake and Nelson is GONE....

but appparently she's not perfect.

Compare her to Ted Kennedy, Robert Byrd, Biden..... what is so wrong with her????

I just don't get the visceral dislike she conjours up with some of the Republicans ... she's not perfect, heck she maybe a complete loon, but she's a loyal Republican that will NOT VOTE like Nelson and WILL be loyal to the Republican party.

I'd rather vote for a wino off the street that the phony hair spray addict Nelson....

give him a mirror and comb, get him out of the senate.... Go Harris... she looks better "mounted" than he does anyway...

Bush No. 2 is probably better off going to the Senate. I don't think people want a dynasty in this country.

With regards to Florida's politics, at least Gallagher got sent packing. That guy was an idiot.

In 2005, Gallagher actually polled well against Nelson. Many Freepers hoped he would ditch the Governor's race and challenge Nelson. Then for some reason he had to pander to the Terri Schavio crowd and accuse Crist of murdering Terri.

Crist DID support the murder of Terri.

You can always tell that somebody has no clue about politics or is lying, when he calls Fla. a "swing state".
Dude FLORIDA IS GONE. The rat will NEVER be competitive in Florida again.

Harris will probably lose but it won't have anything to do with the rest of the state, or don't you realize that chuckie?
