Shut up or else, military tells Guantanamo lawyers
The Sunday Morning Herald (Miami) ^ | October 15, 2006 | Carol Williams

THE US Marine Corps has threatened to punish two military lawyers if they continue to speak publicly about reported prisoner abuse at Guantanamo Bay, a civilian colleague has said.

The threat to Lieutenant-Colonel Colby Vokey and Sergeant Heather Cerveny follows their report that guards bragged about beating prisoners, said Muneer Ahmad, a law professor at American University in Washington who helps in the defence of a Canadian suspect.

The order has heightened fears among the military defenders of Guantanamo prisoners that their careers will suffer for exposing flaws and injustices in the system, Professor Ahmad said at the weekend.

This is ridiculous. Nobody is saying that the lawyer shouldn't defend his client. They're saying that he shouldn't talk publicly about the facts of his case, which is perfectly appropriate. A military lawyer has the right to defend his client in a court of law. He does not acquire some sort of extra right to spout off about policy that other officers do not possess.

That's what I thought. Seemed to be rather poor judgment and not very professional.

Your #12----awesome, and unexpected) especially for someone with the handle "69ConvertibleFirebird" (which coincidentally, was Shakespeare's favorite car).

Thanks. Although I get no credit for the text of #12 (see the referenced web site near the top of #12). The author goes on to describe more lawyer bashing in other Shakespeare. Very well written.

Yes, I believe that you're right about Shakespeare and '69 convertible Firebirds. He was often times seen lighting up the tires at ye old blacksmith shop on a Friday night :)
