In Final Weeks, G.O.P. Focuses on Best Bets ("Senior Republican Leader": Conceding Ohio Senate Race)
NY Times ^ | October 16, 2006 | ADAM NAGOURNEY

Senior Republican leaders have concluded that Senator Mike DeWine of Ohio, a pivotal state in this year’s fierce midterm election battles, is likely to be heading for defeat and are moving to reduce financial support for his race and divert party money to other embattled Republican senators, party officials said.

The decision to effectively write off Mr. DeWine’s seat, after a series of internal Republican polls showed him falling behind his Democratic challenger, is part of a fluid series of choices by top leaders in both parties as they set the strategic framework of the campaign’s final three weeks, signaling, by where they are spending television money and other resources, the Senate and House races where they believe they have the best chances of success.

Republicans are now pinning their hopes of holding the Senate on three states — Missouri, Tennessee and, with Ohio off the table, probably Virginia — while trying to hold on to the House by pouring money into districts where Republicans have a strong historical or registration advantage, party officials said Sunday. Republicans also said they would run advertisements in New Jersey this week to test the vulnerability of Senator Robert Menendez, one of the few Democrats who appear endangered.

Senior national Republican strategists who had been briefed on decisions made during the party’s internal deliberations discussed the overall strategic thrusts but declined to provide specific dollar figures, saying that would give too much information to the Democrats.

The decision involving Mr. DeWine offers the most compelling evidence so far that Republicans are circling their wagons around a smaller group of races, effectively conceding some Senate and House seats with the goal of retaining at least a thin margin of control...

Bingo! When he joined the litttle cabal regarding filibusters I lost all respect for him. However he did win the primary and now requires support, till the next primaries.

I see you are doing your best to put on the charade that the "news" the NYT prints is actually true.

So the NYT has started fixing races through media control and influence for this election. They usually start a little closer to the election. They must be worried.

Bob Taft is an Ohio problem. Yet how many times have we heard put a true conservative on the ballot and watch them mop up in the general election.

So why then is Blackwell hurting more than DeWine who is the true RINO? Because Blackwell is Blackwell.

Wow. The things you learn about Ohio government here on FR.

Dude, you're whining and moaning because people were saying what was obvious and needed to be said, that the Ohio GOP needed an overhaul. Sorry if that pissed off your RINO buddies but let's face it, they despised Blackwell already.

Who are these "Senior Republican leaders" conceding defeat to the NY Times? That's the real question to be asked.

The real clue is to watch how much more money the National Republican Senatorial Committee sinks into Ohio. Their commercials are clearly identified. If you see a drop off in them then the story has basis in fact.

I am a native Ohioan living in Indiana. I have polled the relatives. I have 10 DeWines, 2 Browns and one will not vote in that race because she hates both of them. Don't count Mike out yet. I just wish I could move back home to help. Go Bucks! Beating the snot out of MSU, Almost as good as beating Michigan!

YES, but he still went wobbly on things, BUT he's a damn sight better than Sherrod Brown.

1) Even if it's true (which I doubt), DeWine is LOADED with cash and doesn't need RNC money.

2) In fact, I'm hearing that across the board, the Republicans have oodles more cash than the Dems.

LOL. Folks, please. Can this be any more bogus if it were coming from Dan Rather? It's the NEW YORK TIMES for God's sakes. Rasmussen's latest polls have had DeWine leading, and that's not taking into account POLL BIAS, which means he's probably closing in on "safe" territory.

And, why does any "Republican leader" ever, ever, ever give any information to the NY Slimes?

It should be a policy: Anyone who talks to that newspaper is FIRED!!!

Makes one wonder just how bad Brown must be in order for such a liberal newspaper to recommend DeWine.

From what I understand, he is really scummy.

Hagel and McCain are not "Senior Republican leaders."  And if these anonymous sources aren't either one of them, they're either somone like them who has an agenda that is predicated on the current true leaders being knocked down a peg (say, Trent Lott, maybe?) or they simply don't exist.

I just keep going back to this headline:

Bush, Rove 'Almost Inexplicably Upbeat' About GOP Prospects...

George and Karl have a way of being right about things like this.  I just keep reminding myself that they have information that isn't being made available to us by the DBM.

Mark your calendar; Steele and Cardin will have their Senatorial debate on Meet the Press October 29. Should be good. Steele is quite the orator.

I've got to believe that many of Maryland's black population will "secretly" vote for Steele.

Whatcha think?

DeWine didn't help himself with the base by joining the bi-partisan team of 14 who would decide on judicial appointments. You may recall that shortly after he joined that team, the conservaives made sure his son did not win the GOP primary to run to replace him.

Yeah, I've thought a lot about that. Rick Santorum is also paying a price for endorsing Specter against a great Conservative, Pat Toomey.

Pay backs are hell. (But, I still hope DeWhiner and Rick win.)

Not until now. :)

It's a NYTimes fabrication. The left once again trying to affect an election by posting garbage.

DeWine will win.

It was just an example.

I was pointing out that the MSM is not writing any articles about where democrat party officials are focusing their party dollars.

Only republicans and then only to spin as surrender. If the the enemy is finished you can stop shooting.

The MSM would have spun the allies leaving after ww ii as defeat.

Are you actually trying to say that the Columbus GOP heirarchy has supported Blackwell?? ROFLOL!

You've got things completely backwards there. IF Blackwell loses, it will be because the 'erudite' Ohio establishment never really got behind him, not because his 'people' complained about it.

He's head and shoulders above Strickland in every single way, and he's the best thing to come along in Ohio politics in a very long time.......but the Blackwell people have had to fight the establishment because he's too far to the right. (Which is where YOU ought to be).

He should have had gung ho support from Columbus from day one. Thanks a bunch for your part in trying to throw him away.....

btw.........this is not to say that I have given up on his winning. It's still uphill but he can make it because he is EXACTLY what Ohio needs after Taft.

The only Democrat pickup I'm absolutely sure of is in Rhode Island. But as it's Rhode Island, it doesn't make much of a difference.
