Key Republican joins Dems opposing Bolton nomination (WHY DID GOP WASTE ONE DIME ON CHAFEE?)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- This is probably not what President Bush had in mind when he stressed bipartisanship after the Democratic Party's midterm elections sweep.

A key Senate Republican has joined Democrats in opposing one of Bush's initiatives for the lame-duck Congress: John Bolton's nomination as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

With leaders from both parties promising a new bipartisan Washington, Bush began efforts to get two of his most controversial decisions approved before the Democrats take over.

. . . .

But Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee, who was defeated in this week's election, said he would block Bolton's nomination.

Chafee, a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, told reporters that he did not believe Bolton's nomination would move forward without his support.

"The American people have spoken out against the president's agenda on a number of fronts, and presumably one of those is on foreign policy," the Rhode Island moderate told The Associated Press.

"And at this late stage in my term, I'm not going to endorse something the American people have spoke out against."

The committee, dominated 10-8 by Republicans, requires a majority vote to send the nomination to the Senate floor. A tie would be the same as a no vote.

. . .

Bolton's appointment will expire in January unless the Senate confirms him, and the probable next chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee says approval is unlikely.

"I see no point in considering Mr. Bolton's nomination again in the Foreign Relations Committee because, regardless of what happens there, he is unlikely to be considered by the full Senate," said Democratic Sen. Joe Biden, who is set to become the committee's chairman and control the agenda in January.

It's time to play hardball and demonstrate how obstructionist they are.

When Bush didn't escort film crews through the vandalized White House I knew he wasn't going to play hardball.

Chafee was kicked to the curb. The voters don't agree he's "Key" to Republicans.

No pay for Bolton if he's a recess appt.

Its been suggested that we start a
"Feed the Bolton Family" fund.

I'll kick in.

Even if Chaffee did approve, there is no way the Dims would have let him come to a vote. We should just get over it and nominate a new guy like Alito even the Rats can't filibuster.

Actually, the people of Rhode Island spoke out against YOU, and YOU blocked Bolton, so your own state repudiated Your POSITION, so you should not stubbornly cling to that position.

What does Whitehouse think? Was he opposed to Bolton? Why are they opposed to Bolton anyway, its the U.N., and he's doing a great job.

This twerp should have been brought to the woodshed a long time ago. One good thing about this defeat on Tuesday, is that this traiterous bum is history.

The American people have spoken out against the president's agenda

Hey, Moron! You were the one kicked out of office, not Bush! They've spoken out against your agenda! Oh, but wait, they voted in the Dems, and you and the Dems have the same agenda, so I guess it's okay. Chaffee just has an "R" after his name because he thinks it's a prettier letter. The fact that he's replace by a Democrat makes no difference to the makeup of the Congress. The Dem is probably more conservative than he is!

From what I have seen, with 20% pathetic turnout, there is no mandate to do anything conservative. Bush doesn't owe the conservatives squat. They stayed home Tuesday. Now we all pay the price.

That's true. They deserted our troops, too. How awful they must feel!

The MSM pulled it off. Without the MSM biased news coverage, the democrats had nothing.

"The president should tell the people that he needs his man at the UN at dangerous times, the dems say they want to work together, and if they block his personnel the results will be squarely on THEIR heads. Should."

President Bush has repeatedly stated this position over the past several months.

It's highly probable we're going to have b. clinton talking at us on this topic; more than he already does!

What do you think? Hillary in the oval office and bill at the helm in the UN?

Did the RNC really spend money on Chafee? Idiots. I'm glad Mehlman is gone.

I'd really like to see Newt as RNC Chairman. Say what you want about his "baggage", but his mind is sharp as a tack, he knows how to rally the troops, and he knows what buttons to push with the voters.

Does anyone know if Chafee can immediately be stripped of his committee assignments? Can Frist remove him at this stage, with weeks left in the term?

The only way the Bolton nomination moves forward is to get Chafee off of the committee.

"That's a good idea. They'll be the party of "no" for the next two years, and the activity will keep them and their media legions out of our hair for the next 2 years."

There always is some danger in that strategy.

You don't really follow the poliics of this because the GOTV effort was very successful in a lot of districts. Only thing is, they didn't vote for Republicans.

Now what does that tell you? Quit blaming voters. Blame the GOP who ran crappy campaigns.
