Some 800 inmates riot in California prison

Guards battled for four hours to subdue some 800 rioting inmates at a Chino, California prison in one of the state's largest such uprisings in years, an official said on Sunday.

The fighting at the California Institution for Men in Chino east of Los Angeles began at 9:24 a.m. (1424 GMT) on Saturday and continued until 1:30 p.m., said Oscar Hidalgo, a spokesman for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

"They used everything from tear gas, batons, they used wooded and foam projectiles," Hildago said of the guards. "There were so many inmates involved at one time that they had to pull back and regroup."

Officials brought in reinforcements from other prisons and local police, both to regain control of the prison and to assure that no one escaped from the area spanning 2,500 acres during the fighting.

One inmate suffered stab wounds and remains in serious condition; 27 other inmates were taken to area hospitals for medical treatment, Hidalgo said. Another 24 were treated for minor injuries at the prison and one guard suffered heat exhaustion.

Gang conflicts are often the cause of fights within California's prisons, and corrections facilities are often starkly divided along racial lines by the inmates themselves. Officials are investigating the cause of the latest riot, Hidalgo said.

The Chino prison, which first opened in 1941, is divided into four facilities with minimum to medium security, with inmates living in largest dormitory areas. The prison was under lock-down on Sunday and officials were inspecting the amount of physical damage.

"We're looking at transferring approximately 36 inmates because of unacceptable housing situations," Hidalgo said. "It is one of the largest altercations we've had, no doubt."

The Hispanics have the deep cultural tradition of macho"honor"and they are willing to go down to the death at the slightest hint of"disrespect"while black criminals seem to be more motivated by greed and "getting rich or die trying".

Those were my observations too.

Actually, the illegals get beat down by the home grown Hispanics, and serves as punks for them, but let a Black or White boy touch one and the war is on. Ironically, the 'Marlietos' are men of respect, even though most of them are in on a sex beef. The Joint is it's own world, with it's own values.

People have been referring to the Captains Quarters as a rebuke to the assertions of the article. The Captain's Quarters makes the assertion that -- for the numbers to be true -- it would have to be the case that a small number of people were committing a lot of crimes. That is to say far outside the statistical norm for the USA. The problem is that he didn't actually check the federal stats. As it happens it is the case that illegals tend to be very repeat offenders.

Illegal Alien Crime Wave

On April 7, 2005, the US Justice Department issued a report on criminal aliens that were incarcerated in federal and state prisons and local jails. In the population study of 55,322 illegal aliens, researchers found that they were arrested at least a total of 459,614 times, averaging about 8 arrests per illegal alien. Nearly all had more than 1 arrest. Thirty-eight percent (about 21,000) had between 2 and 5 arrests, 32 percent (about 18,000) had between 6 and 10 arrests, and 26 percent (about 15,000) had 11 or more arrests. Most of the arrests occurred after 1990. They were arrested for a total of about 700,000 criminal offenses, averaging about 13 offenses per illegal alien. One arrest incident may include multiple offenses, a fact that explains why there are nearly one and half times more offenses than arrests. Almost all of these illegal aliens were arrested for more than 1 offense. Slightly more than half of the 55,322 illegal aliens had between 2 and 10 offenses.

CRIMINAL HISTORY

More than two-thirds of the defendants charged with an immigration offense were identified as having been previously arrested. Thirty-six percent had been arrested on at least 5 prior occasions; 22%, 2 to 4 times; and 12%,1 time. Sixty-one percent of those defendants had been convicted at least once; 18%, 5 or more times; 26%, 2 to 4 times; and 17%, 1 time. Of those charged, 49% had previously been convicted of a felony: 20% of a drug offense; 18%, a violent offense; and 11%, other felony offenses. Twelve percent had previously been convicted of a misdemeanor. Defendants charged with unlawful reentry had the most extensive criminal histories. Nine in ten had been previously arrested. Of those with a prior arrest, half had been arrested on at least 5 prior occasions. Fifty-six percent of those charged with a reentry offense had previously been convicted of a violent or drug-related felony. By contrast, under half of those charged with alien smuggling, a third of those charged with unlawful entry, and just over a quarter those charged with misuse of visas and other charges had previously been arrested. The criminal histories of these defendants were generally less extensive: more than 70% had been previously arrested fewer than 5 times. Why bother sto-pping the riots?
Clear the guards out of harm's way, and let them go at it. It's the best way to clean up some of the over crowding, IMO. They are all basically useless. They are a high dollar burden to the Kalifornia tax-payers, and the costs of getting new guards each year goes up and up.

Right now I'm mentoring one of my old students from 2002 who is locked down at a prison in the Central Valley."Deandre"was one of my brightest students back then and came from a solid two parent family,his dad being an aeronautical engineer.Not the same old ghetto kid coming up hard stereotype.
Then didn't hear from him for years till I read an article where he and an"OG"robbed these two lesbians coming out of a bar at gunpoint!I'll be damned if I didn't just about faint when I saw Deandre was one of the perps.
Anyway,he has found his niche in the joint.He hasn't whined or made excuses or tried to blame"The Man".He F'ed up and he knows he has to cool his heels for six more years and thats the way it should be.

Last legislative session, I sat through a long televised hearing on the prison policy of keeping races separated during their initial orientation period. Democrats, one after another, decried the policy as discriminatory and claimed that the prison administration's justification of the policy, namely to prevent riots, was racist. Over and over again, they denounced any claim that mixing races has a tendency to produce riots. And... once again, liberal PC fantasy falls apart when it's exposed to reality.

Not that legislative liberals, or the activists who brought the lawsuit, care. They're on to their next bogus crusade.

And, once again, the rest of us are left to clean up the mess they created.
