WASHINGTON, May 27 (UPI) -- Mike Huckabee, a GOP candidate for U.S. president, Sunday pushed his idea of replacing the federal tax system with a 23 percent "consumption tax."

The former Arkansas governor said on "Fox News Sunday" the current tax system "is not only burdensome, but extremely expensive."

As a self-employed person, this is music to my ears. And it’s not only the pain of having to write periodic huge checks to the IRS that I hate, but all the stress and confusion that goes into assembling the information, trying to put it into a form that is intelligible to them, worrying about what will be “allowed” (like I have to be “allowed” to use my own money) and what not, etc.

I hope Huckabee stays with this idea. Many people mention it, but then they seem to drift away from it when they are in a position to make it a reality or at any rate, bring it closer.

And what's the best "consumption tax"?

The Adjustable National Tariff.

So why do we support Pakistan? And why did we allow them to obtain a nuke while we rattle our sabers at Iran, who by all reports cannot come close to possessing a nuke for years?

The current foreign policy has many more holes than Doctor Paul’s.

Because Pakistan has never advocated wiping Israel off of the face of the Earth, and have been a great ally in the WoT. I’d trust Pakistan more than Iran with a nuke, any day.

Your darling Paul didn’t agree with the Iraq invasion, when there is overwhelming evidence that Saddam had Al Qaeda links, and was a terrorist himself.

23% sounds pretty damned high to me. It could turn out worse for a lot of people, depending how they define “consumption.”

Are you familiar with the Barbary Pirates? Our naval forces spent 15 years seeking out these Muslim renegades and preventing them from attacking our civilian ships, enslaving our citizens, and extorting tribute from our government. It wasn’t easy, but we slew those dragons. Thus comes the first line of the Marine Corps Hymn, “From the Halls of Montezuma to the Shores of Tripoli, we fight our country’s battles...”

Why should we not seek out the Islamofascists today and kill them? Please do not deny their complicity in the smoldering ruins of three thousand dead American office workers in New York City, our embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, and various other places around the world. We MUST fight this war; it came to our shores. Throughout his Presidency, Thomas Jefferson similarly fought a long war against those pirates attacking our merchant vessels on the high seas. Both Usama bin Laden and the pasha of Tripoli declared war against us.

I’ve been liking Huckabee more and more the more I have heard about him. If I were in Chicago, I’d vote early and vote often for him...so would my grandma, my grandad, their parents, uncles, aunts, and grandparents...

www.fairtax.org Check it out. By removing all income taxes, including those on businesses through the entire manufacturing process of a product, about 23% of the cost of the product is removed. Add the 23% consumption tax, and the price is back to where it is today. But that website can explain it better than I can.

I’m assuming that state and local taxes will remain in place. And continue their ever upward spiral. And then there’s those usage fees and excise taxes. Can someone clue me in to what happens to all the other than federal. Freegards.

Like I said, he supported the invasion of Afghanistan. Therefore, you cannot claim that he will not fight the Islamofascists. He won’t engage in selective nation-building.

How does this differ from the Fair Tax that Neal Boortz talks about? I only hear him occasionally, and only lately.

I'm not familiar with either proposal, but would be interested to know how feasible either would be.

Most sales tax schemes include a universal tax prebate to every individual, rich or poor, equivalent to the tax rate times the local poverty level, with some correction for multiple members of the household and marital status. IIRC, the FairTax scheme also employs a prebate, meaning that almost everyone benefits (save for folks currently employed by the IRS); the actual savings come largely from decreased government overhead and a reduction in the cost of compliance.

IMO, the greatest benefit of implementing the FairTax scheme (aside from the destruction of the IRS itself) would be the shot in the arm to business climate, especially for domestic industry. When income is taxed instead of consumption, a natural advantage is bestowed upon foreign manufacturers and producers, who are free from that taxation burden. Replacing income taxation with a consumption tax levels the playing field by more uniformly applying taxation. It also makes America a much more attractive place for corporations to drop anchor.

Well, that would be great except that the islomicnazis are also in Iraq. (Do I even need to remind you of the UN resolutions, collation forces....) So I will not vote for a man who believes in selective fighting.
