The Inside Story Of How The Senate Immigration Bill Died
Right Wing News ^ | June 08, 2007 | John Hawkins

Posted on 06/07/2007 11:54:04 PM PDT by indcons

A GOP Aide, who's one of my sources in the Senate, gave me the rundown on what happened to the Senate bill today.

After the 2nd cloture vote failure at noon on Thursday, Harry Reid could not get unanimous consent to call up amendments to the bill because Jim DeMint refused to give his consent. This was extremely problematic for Reid because he wanted to get in votes on 6 more amendments before the last try at a cloture vote.

At that point, all the senators who were participants in the "Grand Compromise" AKA the "Masters of the Universe" by the opponents of the bill, leaned on DeMint to try to get him to give consent for the bill to move forward. Unfortunately for them, DeMint wouldn't budge. This essentially killed the entire afternoon that the pro-amnesty side hoped to use to shore up support for the bill.

While DeMint was gumming up the works, the opponents of the bill, including most prominently Jim DeMint, Jeff Sessions, and Tom Coburn, huddled and came up with a list of conservative amendments they wanted considered.

The "Grand Compromise" crowd didn't want a lot of these amendments to be voted on because either some of the amendments would have been accepted and it would have killed the bill or alternately, they would have had to vote against common sense enforcement measures and made themselves look bad.

Eventually, after the process was tied up all afternoon and failed a third cloture vote, Harry Reid yanked the bill even though the opponents of the bill said they were willing to stop gumming up the process as long as all the amendments they wanted were voted on today.

My source told me that he thinks this will kill the bill because the Senate has now voted against cloture 3 times and that means that if they want to bring it back up, they'll probably have to start from scratch and go through the regular committee process.

PS: I asked my source if his boss has been hearing from his constituents on this bill and what the for and against ratio was. He said that they have received thousands and thousands of calls and the ratio was something like 95%-98% against the bill.

PS #2: I also asked my source why he thought so many Republicans had been supporting such an incredibly unpopular bill. He gave three reasons:

First off, there was what he referred to as the "Rovian School of thought," which says that passing this bill would capture the Hispanic vote for the GOP for decades to come.

Next up, there's the "Chamber of Commerce" vote. He says these Republicans were heavily influenced by business groups that want cheap labor no matter what the cost is for the rest of the country.

Then there was the last group, the smallest group in his opinion, who were willing to sign onto a terrible bill just so they could say they were part of a big reform that had bipartisan support.

No surprise there. And the funny thing is that we used the La Raza direct phone lines to call the various senators.....LOL.

Of course, it is still too early to celebrate as these shameless creatures (Dim and RINO senators) might still make one more attempt in the near future.

Gratitude???!

These friggin morons thought millions of dirt-poor, uneducated Mexican peasants, who nearly put the socialist Obrador in power in their own country, would vote for the REPUBLICANS for DECADES out of gratitude???

The left won’t give up that easy, they’ll try again and again.

Want to make a difference in American politics? The next time you give donations to politicians, consider DeMint, Coburn and Sessions.

I am Hispanic and I occasionally listen to the Spanish TV networks. The amount of hatred that comes out of there for this country and Bush makes CNN look like a children’s program. And this administration thinks they’ll like him? He’s out of his mind.

First off, there was what he referred to as the "Rovian School of thought," which says that passing this bill would capture the Hispanic vote for the GOP for decades to come.

This is the kind of thinking that dilutes the core meaning of a party. Why on Earth would we want a traditionally-democrat bloc coming into our "big tent" when they agree with us on virtually nothing else? So they can then scare Republican senators to become more liberal in the future?

It's not just about numbers, RNC. It's about philosophy.

Next up, there's the "Chamber of Commerce" vote. He says these Republicans were heavily influenced by business groups that want cheap labor no matter what the cost is for the rest of the country.

The dirty secret of the Republican party is that it's STILL beholden to big business interests, no matter how little we discuss that fact here.

Then there was the last group, the smallest group in his opinion, who were willing to sign onto a terrible bill just so they could say they were part of a big reform that had bipartisan support.

Again, appealing to a voting bloc we don't want filling our ranks--in this case, the Stupid.

Now's the time for some conservative to put up a meaningful, binding bill to close the border

Crank up the highway sound barrier people and start delivery of posts and panels.

It will give the weenies something to vote for so they can save face.

95%-98% yet most of our CongressEffUps are so greedy to pass this. Except for a few like Mr. DeMint, who seems to have a pair of real live gonads. I'm starting to like that guy.

Just like the Republicans who passed the civil rights bill over Democrat opposition pocketed the black vote out of gratitude for decades. Godspeed,

Bump to your post.

I agree....I called Sen. Sessions’ office in DC yesterday and promised to support his campaign in the next election. Will add DeMint, Coburn, and Cornyn to that list.

We just came back from So Cal, and noticed while we were there, that the Hispanic population is becoming more and more stirred up with hatred toward Whites, much like the attitude of many inner city Blacks. Oh, and the maids in the hotel weren’t Hispanic, they were Asian, probably from Vietnam or Thailand. They were very pleasant, but their English was worse than the Hispanic maids that you usually see.

You’re right. Even if we took in 20 million of the Mexican MIDDLE CLASS (assuming it were that big), it would be a huge, huge, uphill battle to capture that vote and we would probably lose it for at least 3 generations.

My son’s wife has been in this country legally, trying to finish off the immigration process and getting handed one setback after another. Let’s work to get legal immigration through in a more timely manner and with a lot less cost. These lawyers delight in finding a way to lengthen the process so that they can collect more fees. It’s outrageous! They seem to charge by what they think the person can afford and strip them blind. I see no reason for a peron in this country legally to take umpteen years to process. They cannot even get a work permit for ages, then it has to be renewed constatly because there is no action on the process to become a citizen. Let’s somehow get the legal process working better so that those already waiting, and I DO MEAN WAITING...get proper treatment and can get on with their lives. This is a shame and embarrassment. In the meantime, let’s get our Congress critters to shore up the borders, then we can begin to talk about immigration reform. Let’s enforce what we already have more effectively and se if it would work...if it was used correctly.

Maybe another thing that needs to happen is to criminalize the interference of politicians in allowing certain groups to process in without proper credentials and their influence with other groups to allow illegals to work without proper paperwork. Clean up the system and punish those politicians that break the law.
