Why I'm Voting for Mitt Romney...
Conservative Blogger ^ | 06/07/07 | William Smith

Posted on 06/08/2007 1:30:01 PM PDT by Reaganesque

[Before I begin this posting, I want to stress and make absolutely clear that at no time have I ever accepted any money from Mitt Romney or Romney for President, Inc. for my endorsement, nor is it solicited by them. These are my views as a registered voter of the Great State of New Hampshire in the First in the Nation Primary.]

Until yesterday I was an undecided Republilcan voter in the New Hampshire Primary.

Yesterday was when I had the opportunity to see Governor Romney in an intimate setting at the New Hampshire Institute of Art. The occasion: an "Ask Mitt Anything" campaign appearance which is just as it sounds. He promises that anyone can ask anything, but he says he may not be able to answer.

I thought his candor and his honesty were something I've missed in the leadership of this country.

When I listen to Mitt Romney, I believe that he wants to serve his country because he wants to change it for the better and not because he's some kind of shameless opportunist.

I believe Mitt Romney is a leader. I believe he can and will put the right people around him to get things done in Washington and I believe he will manage them effectively.

I believe he is thoughtful man who is willing to listen to others, even if he doesn't agree with them.

I believe that his business experience can help improve things like our Federal Budget, energy independence and the health care system in America.

I believe that he wants to secure the borders of this nation to help ensure our sovereignty and, by doing so, also ensure our greatness as a society.

I believe Mitt Romney can help make America great once again and i believe that Mitt Romney is the best choice for the next President of the United States of America.

Oh, but I can hear all the "nay-sayers" now...

"But Mitt is a flip-flopper."

I respect a man who can look at a position he's had and realize he may very well be wrong. It takes courage to do that and even more courage to be willing to stand up and take the hit. Mitt Romney doesn't change his opinions with the direction of the wind--not like the Bay State's Junior Senator, anyway.

"That Romney guy is a Mormon."

Yes, he is. I've known many Mormons in my life and they've been some of the kindest and most honorable people I've ever had the good fortune to meet. I lived with friends of the family for three years while I lived in Denver and they opened their home and their hearts to me and they happened to be Mormon. His faith is important to him, but I believe he's an American running for his country's highest office first.

"He's too slick and polished."

Perhaps we've become too accustomed to a leader who is unvarsnished and is a dreadful public speaker. Mitt Romney is intelligent, articulate, refined, polished and is an outstanding speaker and communicator. That's the kind of leader you want representing you, isn't it? It will be refreshing to have a President who doesn't speak in five or six word bursts or continually put his foot in his mouth.

"But I don't agree with him on every position."

You know what, neither do I! I have a couple of notable disagreements with Governor Romney--and especially on gay marriage. However, for me, he's still the best candidate in this race. You know, there's an old political axiom--and I don't know who said it--but the only candidate you'll ever see completely eye-to-eye with is you...once you decide to run for office. I wish Mitt had different stances on a couple of issues, sure, but I still believe he can lead this country effectively.

As a New Hampshire native, I've had time to watch and observe Mitt Romney as he governed the Commonweath of Massachusetts. I saw him beat a candidate from the Democrat establishment in a state that's got an overwheming Democrat majority--and he did it 50% of the vote. One out of every two voters who went to the polls cast a vote for Mitt Romney including a good number of Democrats.

I also saw him try to turn around a state in a liberal tailspin. During his watch in Massachusetts, he balanced budgets. He lowered taxes. He left Massachusetts with nearly a billion dollar budget surplus. Unheard of things in the most liberal state in the union.

So, yesterday when I saw the Governor and I asked him my question, I didn't get an answer that was politically correct. I got the truth. After the event, I shook his hand and he thanked me for coming out and I got the sense that he was the "real deal."

When I go to the polls in the New Hampshire Primary--whenever that is since it hasn't been scheduled yet--I will happily, enthusiastically and proudly cast my vote for Mitt Romney.

You can learn more about Governor Romney online at www.mittromney.com and if you have the opportunity to attend an "Ask Mitt Anything," I would whole-heartedly encourage you to do so.

The Mass leftest media went nuts trying to trash Mitt while he was governor. They about pulled their hair out....nothing stuck! This is one of the reasons I like him.

Ok, but Massachusetts is not the South. It is an entirely different type of state. The South is much more conservative. What plays in Massachusetts will bomb here. That video may mean nothing to the people in Massachusetts, but to people here, it would be a deal breaker.

If you think there is anger about the Republican Party trying to railroad the people by changing illegal aliens to legal Americans, just watch. If the Republican Party chooses a candidate who said what Mr. Romney said, the conservatives in the South will feel just as betrayed, just as used, and just as angry.

This is a different world than the elections of yesterday. You used to rely on newspapers and magazines to give you the view of candidates, and if the media liked the candidate, anything done in the past was magically erased. But today’s candidates have to be careful of everything because everything is recorded for posterity and not everyone goes to the media for all their information. This video is out there on the internet for everyone to see — including democratic operatives who will make sure it seen by the voters who would most likely be offended by Romney’s words.

Unfortunately for Romney, this is not a newspaper report or a magazine article where there could be reasonable doubt whether what was said was true. They have Romney recorded — his face, his mouth, his words. There is no getting around it. There is no equivocating. There is nothing less conservative and he said it. How do you defend against your own words? How much energy will you have to expend trying to put out all the fires that those words ignite. Once you’ve said something, even if you’ve since changed your mind, getting the words back is like putting toothpaste back into the tube — not easy to do at all.

I take it you've given up on arguing over Romney's roll in illegal immigrants showing up in the ER, eh? Well, let's look at your next erroneous and un-researched claim:

"Romney did nothing [to address illegal immigration] until 3 weeks before he left Office."

First, I would argue that Romney actually took some innovative steps to solving a problem--steps that were later copied in other states. That said, the facts don't suit your claims.

DRIVER'S LICENCES: Governor Romney Opposed Efforts To Give Driver's Licenses To Illegal Immigrants. "'Those who are here illegally should not receive tacit support from our government that gives an indication of legitimacy,' the governor said, echoing arguments that opponents have voiced in the Commonwealth and in other states considering similar license measures. 'If they are here illegally, they should not get driver's licenses,' he said." (Scott S. Greenberger, "Romney Stand Dims Chances Of License For Undocumented," The Boston Globe, 10/28/03)

ENGLISH IMMERSION: Governor Romney Fought Efforts To Weaken Massachusetts' English Immersion Law. "But yesterday, Romney press secretary Shawn Feddeman said the governor will fight all attempts to slow the implementation of English immersion, known on the ballot as Question 2. ... 'He will veto anything that weakens or delays English immersion,' Feddeman said." (Anand Vaishnav, "Romney Firm On English Timetable," The Boston Globe, 1/24/03

IN-STATE TUITION: Governor Romney Vetoed In-State Tuition For Illegal Immigrants. "Romney also vetoed a number of outside sections of the budget, including:...A plan that would have permitted illegal aliens to pay the same in-state tuition rate at our public colleges and universities as Massachusetts citizens." (Office Of The Governor, "Romney Signs $22.402B Fiscal Year 2005 'No New Tax' Budget," Press Release, 6/25/04)

Now, if you're playing with a time warp and can somehow prove to me that those dates were somehow within 3 months of Romney leaving office, great! If not, I'm afraid we're going to have to make room on top of that scrapheap where we placed your little misdirected ER rant. Okay?

Despite the fluff to which you point,
where Romney’s office talked, talked, talked,
Romney did nothing of FACT
to illegal aliens until the december,
before he left in january.

Romney was all TALK. Did Nothing.
Then, Romney inflicted HIS Dictatorial socialized medicine
to have the citizens pay for HIS mistake of doing
nothing of substance.

“I’m not voting for him in the Primary, but I’m willing to vote for him the General.”

That’s about where I am, too. I’ll almost certainly be voting Republican in the general. However, I really don’t think he’s the best candidate running. I’m open to convincing, though. However, things I’ve heard him say have turned me off a bit. He seems a little bit opportunistic.

I’m William Smith and I wrote the article that Reaganesque posted here.

I’d like to thank those people who called my sexuality into question because I have an ideological difference with Governor Romney. Besides being thoroughly juvenile, it’s also not true.

I’m also not a Mormon. I’m an agnostic who is a borderline athiest these days, thanks. I’ve never been a Mormon and, much to my parents’ chagrin and dismay, I’ve never been a Catholic either.

I’m also not a Romney plant. I really WAS that undecided. I’ve seen and talked to some of the candidates before, but Romney was the only one who impressed me. I went there because the event was in my city that day, just minutes from my house.

But, I suppose it’s easier to dismiss and hurl insults than it is to be substantive about critique.

My disagreement with Mitt Romney on gay marriage is MY disagreement with him and it’s based on things that have happened within my family to a sibling. I could not care any less about the religious argument to marriage and that’s mainly because I could not care any less about religion. I’m referring to The State (and that’s a big “S” meaning “The Government” for those keeping score) and how The State inserts itself in the marriage process. That’s it.

But, hey...if it makes you feel better to call me a “poofer” then have at it. If anyone is truly interested in serious discussion on why I feel the way I do, I can always be reached through the Contact form at my website.

Regards,
William Smith

TOTALLY WRONG. There’s nothing phony about him. His dad was a great governor of my home state of Michigan. If Mitt is anything like his dad was, he’ll be a fantastic president. The first time I ever heard him speak was when he was addressing the incident of the tunnel collapse in Boston when he was governor - he did so very decisively and with great leadership. I had never seen or heard the guy before and was totally impressed..so much so that I thought he should run for the presidency...and now he is. Thanks Mitt.

"TOTALLY WRONG. There’s nothing phony about him."

Then you don't know him. I've known him for 13 years and I formerly supported him. He is a 100% phony.

"His dad was a great governor of my home state of Michigan. If Mitt is anything like his dad was, he’ll be a fantastic president."

His dad was loopy. He was the embarrassment of the '68 Presidential campaign when he said he was "brainwashed" on Vietnam. There's a reason why he was "rewarded" with the insignificant post of HUD Secretary. Worse yet, just like his dad, he left an incompetent buffoon to succeed him as Governor. In Ratsachusetts' case, it's Marxist DeVal Patrick, in Michigan's case, it was the ultra-RINO liberal Slick Willie Milliken.

"The first time I ever heard him speak was when he was addressing the incident of the tunnel collapse in Boston when he was governor - he did so very decisively and with great leadership."

There's your problem right there, you haven't been paying consistent attention. Precious's M.O. is that he was always late to the party. His leadership was dubious, at best, non-existent the rest of the time. He decided to try to act like a leader 2 minutes before the clock ran out, but the rest of us know his track record. You might do some research on the "Big Dig", Matt Amorello, and the other various incompetents connected with this.

"I had never seen or heard the guy before and was totally impressed.."

In other words, you don't know him at all.

"so much so that I thought he should run for the presidency...and now he is."

Well, he thought of it before you. He decided it as soon as he was able to get nothing done as Governor. His ego knows no bounds.

"Thanks Mitt."

That's what DeVal said when Precious abandoned his post, thanking him for electing him Governor. Yup, Romney is a 100% phony and a 100% RINO one-man party wrecking crew. Time to get on the Fred train.

There’s one person who was called to run, not being led by a ginormous ego to something for which they aren’t qualified. It’s time to get on the Fred train.

My idealist heart wants to vote for Ron Paul but my logical head tells me to vote for Mitt Romney. Also, he’s a pretty boy and may peel away some of the shallow women vote from Hi**ary in the general election. I also like Tancreto, Thompson and Hunter (in that order).

Well, you can be pro gay marriage til the cows come home for all I care. But you CAN’T make the lame argument against the “state” minding it’s own business with your position. The “state” in uber liberal cesspools like Massachusetts decided that it could mandate “gay marriage”, overturning 6000 years of recorded human history and law.

That’s like arguing Roe v. Wade was a sound, conservative decision.
