George Noory plans a tribute to Art Bell on the occasion of Art's latest "retirement." George threatens a "tribute song." If we're lucky, they'll replay Art's encounter with Super Glue -- still one of the best live moments in the history of broadcasting. Please, everyone, chime in with your Art Memories.
It was! Goofy and interesting at the same time.
Yeah, I often have to drive overnight, and somehow that crazy show seems to do the trick in staying awake and mentally alert. It wouldn’t work any other time of day I’m sure! Something about being alone on the highways on a starry night and hearing talk of aliens and conspiracies...
I would think the multi pseudo retirements would have lost more of the listening audience.
He should have just announced that he was taking a hiatus from time to time.
I was trying to think of my favorite. I forgot about that show. Think I gotta go with this one myself.
Though anytime that guy that says Art Bell is “the devil’s mouthpiece” is usually a good show too.
I’ve done a lot of late-night deadline journalism with Art on in the background. Good stimulant!
Art Bell did the best Y2K doomsday shows of all. He used to have this guy named Gary North on, who had me thinking the whole thing really was going to crash on January 01, 2000 at 00:00:01.
I’m glad it didn’t all crash because I didn’t have any food stored up and I hadn’t moved to the boonies. Though I did gas up both cars on December 31, 1999 (just in case).
My memories are of the monthly or so ‘should we really be afraid of the ouija board’ shows. I tend to nearly flip my truck. YES, we should be afraid of the ouija boards.
Oh I remember that show.
That was riviting.
in the old days Art used to do debates live. He would call the topic and on his unscreened calls get two folks on both sides of the issue and let em go.............great radio...........the old pilot who called once about area 51 and said ah to hell with it,I’m goin’ in............
it was great but it was later stated by Art to be a hoax
But less than Barbra Streisand?
I thought the same thing when I saw this thread.
That he had passed away.
Glad it was just another retirement moment.
A hoax ... Just like Roswell! (eerie organ chord here)
Good phrase!
lol,, drat!
The Hollow earth expedition shows come to mind as well.
And whatever happened to freeper Crunchyjello?
Wow I didn’t know they had a baby.
Good for them to have such a gift to keep them happily occupied.
Hope he gives up the cigs while around the lil one.
I shouldn’t say “lost fans”, rather he infuriated a small but sizable portion of them. He got a lot of hate mail/email for it, but I think most listeners were glad he stood up to them.
And, then he found another bottomless hole.
Just wasn't the same as the first story, though.
I first tuned in when he was broadcasting on KDWN from the Plaza Hotel in Las Vegas.
My favorites?
The interviews with Emily Lau Wai-hing, an activist for democracy and rights in Hong Kong. This was at the time of the turnover to the Chi-coms. I emailed a couple of times asking that he have her on now, ten years later but.. nothing.
OKC on the night of the attack and for a time after that.
Waco coverage.
To be honest I hope he remains retired. I am tired of peak oil, global warming, climate change, and the end of the world as we know it. Mr. Bell would brook no opinions to the contrary and he refused to book any either. No matter the subject for the night it seemed to always get around to peak oil, global warming, climate change, and the end of the world as we know it. I figured he had another book on the way, I guess not. We was just obsessed, I reckon.
