It's simple. Imagine, your in a cave in the hot desert...It's cooler in the cave, so any air around the outside of the cave will be slightly cooler. At night in the desert cave the cave maintains it's temp, and you'll stay a little warmer in cave, and the air around the cave at night will appear warmer to that sensitive infrared camera.
That's what they discovered here, using a temperature sensitive camera.
