I remember all the talk about a “Coming Ice Age” in the mid to late 1970’s. Sprinkling coal dust on glaciers was seriously suggested.

The ice age scenario is far scarier than global warming — although alarmists would have us believe that global warming will cause an ice age too.

“Alarmists would have us believe that global wwrming will cause an ice age too.”

The scientific mechanism whereby global warming could trigger the next ice age is this. Our Gulf Stream carries warm water to the far north. Then it hits the icy Arctic where the water freeze fresh portions of the water, concentrating the salt in the water below so it is heavier and sinks to the bottom of the ocean where it flows back towards the equator. If the water does not freeze, this circulation can be interrupted and the warm water may cease to be carried far north where it currently modifies the weather, especially in Great Britain and Europe.

I haven’t paid attention to it, but I would not be surprised if similar mechanisms are at work in the Pacific as well. Anyone have scientific information on that?
