No one's perfect, so we have to choose the best (Dobson wrong about '08)
The Holland Sentinel ^ | October 15, 2007 | Alan Helvig

James Dobson is a courageous leader and a battle-scarred warrior. He has gone head to head with the best of them and has done a wonderful job of defending Christian values in the political arena. He has earned our respect and deserves our prayers.

However, just as John Kerry's war record didn't make him a good president, Jim Dobson's record does not make him right about the 2008 presidential race.

Dobson has allowed his pride to cause him to publicly vow "never for the rest of my life to vote for anyone who would kill innocent babies." Making this a personal vow is not the problem. The problem is that he has tied his position to the front-runners for the 2008 presidential election and is publicly encouraging millions to follow his lead. If that happens, Hillary Clinton will most certainly be the next president.

According to most major polls, if the general election were held today, Rudy Giuliani would face Hillary Clinton for president. If this scenario becomes a reality, pro-lifers will be forced to choose which pro-choice candidate would be the best of the two to defend the sanctity of life. According to the Dobson plan, pro-lifers should not vote for either candidate.

Promoting our values can never be accomplished by refusing to vote. A non-vote for Rudy would be the same as casting two votes for Hillary.

American citizens not only have the right to vote, but the responsibility to vote. We have a duty to ourselves, our children and our country to make sure that the best candidates are elected. We never have the luxury of having "ideal candidates," who meet 100 percent of our expectations. In every election, we must choose the best person for the job, from the field of available candidates.

There are also times where we may have to set aside our pride in order to make sure the wrong person does not get elected. The 2008 election could present such an opportunity for the pro-life citizens of this country.

If Dobson wants to take a biblical approach to this situation, he should go back and study the books of Daniel and Esther in the Old Testament.

Daniel was taken captive to Babylon and forced into slavery as an assistant to some very evil kings. He did not refuse to work for them because their pagan practices clashed with his religion. Instead, Daniel held true to his faith and honored God as he worked directly with and for the evil kings.

Esther was chosen to be the queen of a pagan king. She could have gone out of her way to avoid selection, but instead, she gave her best for the sake of her Lord. In doing so, God used her to save his people from complete annihilation by having her convince the pagan king to change his position.

Neither of these Old Testament heroes wanted the task appointed them. Surely they would have preferred to remain with other godly people. However, when the time came, they did what they had to do for the sake of God's plan.

If God gives us a choice between candidates A and B, we do not have the option of choosing D, none of the above.

I would never vote for Rudy, or any other pro-choice candidate, in a primary election. However, once the lots have been cast and I am forced to choose between bad or worse, I will prayerfully make the godly choice.

Dobson's Option C is the promotion of a conservative third-party candidate. Unfortunately, there is not enough time to establish a viable third-party candidate for the 2008 election. First, we need to keep Hillary from becoming president. Then Dobson and company can focus on building a third party.

The solution to the Dobson problem is simple. Americans need to make sure that we don't have two pro-choice candidates on the presidential ballot next November. That battle can only be won in the primaries.

I wasn't referring to you. I was referring to what the author said:

Dobson's Option C is the promotion of a conservative third-party candidate.

NOTHING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN LIFE

Don't Cut and Run, vote pro-life always. It's the only way to really win.

...add to that the fact that Independents saw the party as corrupt and scandal ridden....

Well-said.

Your strawman is very very very weak. The difference is abortion is currently legal. Like it or not that’s a fact. It’s not like Rudy is saying he wants to expand the rights to abortions.

The items you presented were things that currently aren’t legal.

Now if abortion was currently illegal and rudy was saying he wanted to legalize it then your strawman would make more sense.

Dobson was on the Laura Ingraham radio show a few minutes ago. He said he never had any intention to start a 3rd party.

He merely had said that with Rooty as a candidate it could bring about thoughts of a 3rd party.
I think this 3rd party Dobson thing was overblown once again to demonize social conservatives.

There is something I am interested in that needs to be said. It is that unsaid thing that everyone knows and does not care to admit.

I can see many people do not trust the primary process. I know I do not. All you have to do is look at the 2004 Democrat result. Kerry was hardly even mentioned. All at once he became the man.

I believe people think that they have to stand their ground now because the leaders of the party will install whoever they want anyway.

Many people do not want Rooty and they are being clear about letting the powers that be know, they will not vote for him ever.

It is sad that we have lost so much faith in the process, but then we all are disgusted and disappointed with the people in charge. We trust very few of them. All you have to do is look at the House of Misrepresentation and the UN Senate.

Personally I think that’s why many mention 3rd party...just to scare the peeps the top NOT do install someone that will splinter the party.

It’s a tactic to win a primary, but it’s also risky as it can lead to 3rd party or people staying home.

I would agree with that.

Unfortunately, this will splinter the party.

If only by demoralizing the voters.

Yea, actually he did when he said he believes the Federal Government should subsidize it. He backed off that position a bit but, a man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still.

not like Rudy is saying he wants to expand the rights to abortions.

People like Dobson would force his beliefs on everyone if they got the power. No dancing, no drinking, no smoking, no birth control for women, etc. I am against abortion, but it is a personal choice not the law of some intolerant law.

Dancing, drinking, smoking and even the use of birth control are things that a person does with, or to, their own body. Abortion is the killing of another human being, not something a person does to their own body. Huge difference.

“American citizens not only have the right to vote, but the responsibility to vote.”

Correction, should read: American citizens not only have the right to have their voices heard, but the responsibility to have their voices heard. Agree or not on what to actually do, a “no vote” WILL be heard.

My decision will take into account that a liberal republican party will not benefit my children’s country. As bad as Hillary is, someone has to look beyond the next election.

And that's the problem with many conservatives...they too prefer to ignore the constitution in favor of pushing their views on the masses at the federal level.

Who is ignoring the constitution? Going after a constitutional amendment protecting the life of the unborn would be right in line with the constitution. The constitution PROVIDES for amendments. (Sheesh)

A nation-wide ban is NOT going to happen.

You may be right. But the reality is, if that's the case, it isn't going to happen on a state by state basis either.

The point I was making is, the author of this article is trying to say Dobson's motivations are pride. Unless he can read minds and hearts, the writer should stick to arguing against Dobson's position, not make a fool of himself by trying to state as fact what another's motives are.

I can't make any sense out of your sentence. Why are you 'against abortion'? For what reason?

Cordially,

So, If we get 97% of what we want, thats not enough.

We each have to decide what our 'hot button' issues are. You may not agree with what someone else has chosen as their 'hot button', but it's foolish to try to claim one knows that individual's motives for making that choice.

I bet Hillary’s people Love Dobson for what he did. He’s a useful Idiot.

Possibly. But Dobson, like anyone else, has the right to speak his opinions. Hillary probably gets a good chuckle out of reactions by people like you as well. Anything that can cause a rift among Republicans (such as one conservative calling another conservative a 'useful idiot') is music to her ears.

If your “principles” cause you to allow another Clinton presidency, your “principles” could wind up getting us all killed.

The local postition is “conviction”, not “pride”. I would submit to them and to you that “conviction” and “principle” can become a source of pride. In this case, Dobson seems to be saying to God, “I trust you and I give it all over to you, Lord... Unless you force me to choose between Rudy and Hillary. And if that happens, I’m not voting.”

I think you jumped off the rails on this one BigAlPro. You think God requires us to vote when we don’t like either candidate?

You're a Clinton shill.

And, you're DUMB. You're the type of idiot that worships at the altar of the Republican party that inflicted California with Arnold Schwarzenegger in California.

In case you missed, HALF of the members here, including FR's Jim Robinson, will not vote for RINO Rudy under any circumstances. In fact, RINO shills like you have been booted from this website.
