Men being men [and women being womwen] if the average Neanderthal looked anything like this depiction, you have the answer to where the Neanderthals went. They are to a some [perhaps small] extent us European type.
Barring a fertility barrier, IMO it is hard to believe a group of such closely related humans would not have interbred. Extensively? On a limited basis? Either way they are probably us.

It is not your imagination. Anthropologists are getting as PC as everyone else and recently there has been a push to show them as more human, though I doubt they really were. I think if one were to encounter a Neanderthal alive today they would run from it screaming, feeling that they had seen a Bigfoot type creature.More likely, if were left in its natural state, people would more likely think of auto insurance.
Cleaned up, Except for the Brow ridge, they could pass for an athlete.

Yes, they're called Irish people. Irish get the Red Hair from the Vikings. Think Eric the Red.
It's not surprising that the Neanderthals living the same region would have the same skin tone and hair color. Those are adaptations to the high latitudes and lake of sunshine. If anything conditions were even worse in that way, in the times of the Neanderthals.

The above picture of recreation of a Neanderthal child found in is from a Polish blog dated November 16, 2006 At the time that reconstruction was done, it was pretty much just speculation as to hair and skin color. Now there is some physical evidence. But as the article stated, it was reasonable speculation based on climate and available sunlight.
