Aside from being about Neanderthals, this is old news. The above picture of recreation of a Neanderthal child found in is from a Polish blog dated November 16, 2006. For those of you fluent in Polish, here is the link

For those of you who do not read Polish, here is an Earlier Scince blog from July 5, 2005 featuring the same child

That picture actually looks like a girl I knew when I was a kid. Weird.

Men being men [and women being womwen] if the average Neanderthal looked anything like this depiction, you have the answer to where the Neanderthals went. They are to a some [perhaps small] extent us European type.

Barring a fertility barrier, IMO it is hard to believe a group of such closely related humans would not have interbred. Extensively? On a limited basis? Either way they are probably us.

At the time that reconstruction was done, it was pretty much just speculation as to hair and skin color. Now there is some physical evidence. But as the article stated, it was reasonable speculation based on climate and available sunlight.

It’s not a new hypothesis. What’s new is genetic evidence supporting it — before, it was a matterof inference based on the pigmentation of modern populations in the area.
