Just over a week ago it was hard to imagine how the international reputation of the Sudanese government could sink any lower.
Accused of sponsoring the killing and rape of hundreds of thousands of its own people in Darfur and then of blocking the peacekeepers who might protect them - barely a week passed without a threat of sanctions or a new UN resolution.
But thanks to the Gillian Gibbons saga, Sudan has managed to transform its public image from pariah state to something approaching a laughing stock.
If Khartoum was hoping to turn the teddy bear into a rallying point for Muslims across the Middle East it was quickly disappointed.
Condemnation of the British teacher's detention came in from around the world and from all religions - leaving the government looking for an escape strategy.
'Powerless limb'
The carefully stage-managed pardoning of Mrs Gibbons by Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir will have satisfied few within his divided government. ...

The BBC points out the status of the Sudanese government has sunk to a laughable level.
Perhaps if we continue to pray, the Sudanese government might approach the level of being humane and sensible.
Laughing stock? I doubt Gillian Gibbons is laughing.
So she named a teddy bear muhammed... I name my bowel movements muhammed, pbuh, praise allah for roughage!
Umm...isn’t that headline racist?
Maybe now the Muslims are starting to wake up and smell the coffee for a change, that this extremism is getting out of hand.
I’m happy that Ms. Gibbons is safe now.
Maybe next time she’ll try to “do good” in some country that isn’t in the middle of conducting a genocide.
My first reaction, too. It's somewhat hard to laugh at these whackadoodles when you realize that they really would have killed her.
Especially when you can be absolutely certain that in some out of the way mosque in ENGLAND there is some savage imported mullah whipping up his dole-fed, unemployed jihadi-wannabees with the thought of paradise should they manage to kill her.
She's going to be in danger of violent attack by those extremists for the rest of her life.
no one is laughing as they continue to behead infants for giggles
Oh, yeah. I've never actually had a mob outside my window screaming for my blood but I think it's safe to say I wouldn't be giggling.
These are the moderate islamics. They wish to eliminate the 16 million Christians in the south of the country so they can get their farmland and their oil.
Don’t bank on that. The whole Gillian Gibbons afair will be quickly forgotten. The Muslim PR propaganda machine will see to it and our gutless politicians will readily swallow the propaganda and go back calling Islam the ROP.
“Perhaps if we continue to pray, the Sudanese government might approach the level of being humane and sensible.”
Prayer is holy and effective, but one doesn’t pray for a safe landing when one goes skydiving without a parachute. This is exactly what the West is doing in their dealings with Islam. Even a modern Chamberlain would understan Islam for what it is.
I’m having a real tough time ginning up sympathy for this woman. She lay down on a railroad track and was astonished when the train finally ran over her.
Something tells me, it was not voluntary to let her go. I think it was an “or else” proposition, with military implications.
“Let our Royal Subject Go, Or Else”
The only reason she was pardoned is Sudan knew she would be lynched in a matter of hours if they didn't get her out of Dodge quick.
