Is McCain a Conservative?
Washington Post ^ | 1/31/2008 | Robert Novak

Posted on 01/30/2008 10:57:52 PM PST by steveegg

...That was the background for conservative John Fund's Wall Street Journal online column the day before Florida voted. Fund wrote that McCain "has told conservatives he would be happy to appoint the likes of Chief Justice Roberts to the Supreme Court. But he indicated he might draw the line on a Samuel Alito because 'he wore his conservatism on his sleeve.' " In a conference call with bloggers that day, McCain said, "I don't recall a conversation where I would have said that." He was "astonished" by the Alito quote, he said, and he repeatedly says at town meetings, "We're going to have justices like Roberts and Alito."

I found what McCain could not remember: a private, informal chat with conservative Republican lawyers shortly after he announced his candidacy in April 2007. I talked to two lawyers who were present whom I have known for years and who have never misled me. One is neutral in the presidential race, and the other recently endorsed Mitt Romney. Both said they were not Fund's source, and neither knew I was talking to the other. They gave me nearly identical accounts, as follows:

"Wouldn't it be great if you get a chance to name somebody like Roberts and Alito?" one lawyer commented. McCain replied, "Well, certainly Roberts." Jaws were described as dropping. My sources cannot remember exactly what McCain said next, but their recollection is that he described Alito as too conservative....

Yes, he's a war hero, but ever since he's gotten to Washington, he's behaved with very little honor.

His less than honorable behavior began *before* his arrival in Washington, I'm afraid, but that is another story. A shame, as both his father, and his grandfather were US Navy Admirals, and men of honor. He turned his back on his family's tradition of honor, for the sake of ambition, long ago, one step at a time, and the result is what we have today, what you have rightly called a complete disgrace...

Though McCain is the medias pick to represent the Republican party, he is so because they think he will ultimately be easy to beat.
Conservative Republicans like me WILL NOT vote for RINO McLame.
I’ve been through it before with BOB DOLE who also may have been a nice man BUT he was no real conservative.

Sorry,
He is not A WAR HERO.
Yes he was locked in a Viet-Nam prison, but that doesn't make you a WAR HERO.
The man is dangerous and I can't believe I am saying this, but we would be better off with with HITLERY. Why? THE JIMMY CARTER EFFECT.

He was shot down flying a combat mission over Vietnam and was a POW for 5.5 years. Hero or not, he’s given a lot more to his country than you and almost everyone on FR.

and the half that is the "real" John S. McCain isn't at all conservative...and the half that is the "real" John S. McCain isn't at all conservative.

Sadly, there is no real John McCain. There is only a rusty weathervane twisting 'round to the latest breeze.

Obviously there is an issue among conservatives as to who a possible Prez McCain might nominate to a justice position.

But there is even a bigger issue as to who the senate dems will confirm.

At the time, there were enough dems willing to let the Roberts and Alito nominations go forward.

But, when SCOTUS made their glass ceiling decision, those handful of dems who voted for cloture were proven wrong and they will never again vote for cloture on a judge who is a member of the Federalist Society(Roberts/Alito) or a judge who has a federalist paper trail(Janice Brown).

No about what? You dispute what I’ve written? Do tell what is incorrect. You don’t agree that he was shot down over Vietnam and was a POW for years or that he’s given more to his country than almost anyone on FR?

yup, he showed some pretty bad denial tonight in the debate when confronted by his lies. Romney kicked his butt real good.
****************************************************
I didn’t see the debate but it sounds like Romney found his target ,, I was on the receiving end of at least a half dozen McCain robocalls here in FL ,, all of them lies with him claiming to want tax relief and comparing himself to Reagan ,,, Reagan should reach out from the grave and strangle this McIdiot.

I’d say 60/40.

I'd go about 65/35. That lines up precisely with his most recent (2006) ACU rating, although his lifetime rating is still 82.3.

To put things in perspective, the most recent ACU ratings for Hillary and Obama are both 8, with lifetime ratings of 9 and 8, respectively. This is why I don't understand the I'm-gonna-stay-at-home crowd. For all of his faults, McCain is still vastly more conservative than Hillary or Obama.

McCain is McCain. very conservative on some issues and very liberal on others.
