McCain asks conservatives for support

Republican John McCain asked disgruntled conservatives to support his presidential bid on Thursday, shortly after Mitt Romney ended his struggling campaign and made McCain the all-but-certain nominee.

McCain assured a conference of conservative activists he was one of them, citing his commitment to win in Iraq, halt Iran's nuclear ambitions and rein in the federal government while drawing sharp contrasts with potential Democratic opponents Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama.

McCain's speech, which drew boos on the topic of illegal immigration, followed by a few hours Romney's surprise announcement at the conference that he was ending his run to allow Republicans to focus on the November election.

"I feel I have to now stand aside, for our party and for our country," the former Massachusetts governor told the shocked crowd, some of whom gasped and shouted "No, no!" in response.

Whether Clinton or McCain occupies the White House for the next four years, America is in for a rude awakening. I would prefer that a liberal democrat/avowed socialist be blamed for the geopolitical/economic earthquakes that are looming over the horizon. At least that way we will have the whisper of a hope that a genuine conservative may be able to eventually take the reins and pick up the pieces.

I agree. I haven't yet decided what to do with my ballot, but there is no winning option this year.

Our government (both parties) are at war against U.S. citizens. If the citizens don't, or can't, fight back, it's simply going to be a massacre.

Hitler's propaganda war against some of Germany's citizens started seven or eight years before the first casualties in the concentration camps. I have no patience left for those who believe or insist "it could never happen here".

It's not about teaching Republicans a lesson; its about the Republican party trying to make conservatives irrelevant.

If you vote according to basic conservative principles, then there is little to choose from this time around. What is abundantly clear is that the GOP would just as soon have those of us who hew to the ideals of the Founding Fathers just shut the hell up. We're not wanted. We're extremists, you see.

Drug Money - Photographs show the proceeds from drug sales found during a raid of Mexican drug dealers' residence.

Check out these photos. Here's the greatest incentive for politicians to want open borders, and our greatest incentive to get it controlled.

To all those who say they will never vote for him, you are really voting for OBAMA/CLINTON ! IS THAT WHAT YOU WANT??

I don't need to provide any explanations, excuses or rationalizations to say that your statement is categorically false.

Now, if you want to talk about MANDATES? If McCain were elected every pundit, MSM outlet and political hack would trumpet that as a MANDATE for AMNESTY. Most Republicans included.

Amnesty would be the end of the Republic, period.

If it works, maybe Hillary should try it too.

I agree with you that McCain’s support for amnesty is a DEALBREAKER issue for all the reasons consistently mentioned on FR (i.e. 20 million plus illegals plus 80 to 100 million more family members who will demographically DESTROY conservatism, the GOP, and the country as we know it)

What I find absolutely astounding, and is never addressed by McCain’s defenders, is why he STILL refuses to pledge not to sign any illegal alien amnesty bill (In fact, he still refuses to even acknowledge that his bill amounts to amnesty). His “Secure the borders first” and then not pass legislation addressing the 20 Million plus illegals here until there is a “widespread consensus that the borders are secure” position is WHOLLY INSUFFICIENT. Even the Democrats promise to “secure the borders”. It is empty rhetoric and rings hollow coming from someone with the pro-amnesty history of John McCain. There are no specific benchmarks for “consensus”, and having “Border Governors certify that the borders are secure” is completely disingenuous, given how beholden these Democratic Governors (Napolitano, Richardson, and RINO Perry) are to their large hispanic populations. He obviously thinks we are rubes.

I just find it hard to believe that McCain still doesn’t get it. Of all the issues that he has opposed conservatives on, and there are MANY, this is the one issue on which he could convince a substantial number of disaffected conservatives who are currently sitting on the fence to hold their nose and support him. A simple “I personally disagree with conservatives on the issue, however my side fought and lost the battle. As such, I will spend the next 4 years securing the border and promise I will not sign any legalization bill for illegals during my first term in office” would be minimally sufficient for many (but not all) conservatives.

What does it say to us conservatives when he won’t make that very mild concession (which has very little political downside for him)? Is he that beholden to the pro-amnesty Wall Street Journal cheap labor types and the “La Raza” grievance types? Or, as most of us suspect, does he STILL thinks he’s right in pushing amnesty and will do so as President DESPITE THE STRONG OPPOSITION FROM THE OVERWHELMING MAJORITY OF REPUBLICAN (AND INDEPENDENT) VOTERS? Even if we ignored the litany of times he has metaphorically spit in conservatives’ faces, why in the world would should we support someone who is not be willing to make this very simple pledge on such a crucial issue???

Here's my cash donation for Juan McCain, in the currency I know he adores most:

Tell him I suggested he not fritter it all away in one place.

We may be conservative, but we are American first.

Once you've finally managed to descend to the sub-sub-sub-sewer level of implying (however coyly) that anyone who won't vote for your candidate can't possibly really be a good American: you've voluntarily surrendered the high ground, the argument, and your dignity. In that order.

I can see this is not going to be easy, disgruntled Conservatives are also stubborn.

It's easier for you guys that don't have conservative principals.

Uh. I am astonished that so many Freepers don’t get it that Mitt would have been a much bigger target for the Dems.

All they had to do was show the SOUTH PARK cartoon send up of Mormonism. Yeah, it was on par with their sendup of Tom Cruise and Scientology, and just as truthfully funny.

After the Dems ripped us a new one for having a cult member/cult leader for a nominee, they would take away the Christian vote.

Don’t think so? Rove never admitted it, but it was the Christian African American vote that put Bush back in office in 04.

The more I think about that, the more I question whether I want you guys controlling my party. You’re a bunch of extremists.

Notwithstanding your arrogance and condescending attitude, your comment demonstrates your true beliefs.

You are a Republican, not a conservative.

Excellent post, excellently stated joanie. Ty for the ping!

...over the past two decades, we registered republicans have allowed our party to incrementally exclude true conservatives for consideration to hold the highest offices in the land. And how have we done that? We have ‘gone along to get along’. We have held our collective noses and agreed to put in office men who are less and less like genuine American patriots, and more and more like leftist democrats, with each election cycle. And the phony republicans we have put in office have consistently worked with the democrats to stifle any efforts made by genuine conservatives to re-ignite the conservative voice in Washington. And the Constitution and America’s sovereignty be damned.

...I would prefer that a liberal democrat/avowed socialist be blamed for the geopolitical/economic earthquakes that are looming over the horizon. At least that way we will have the whisper of a hope that a genuine conservative may be able to eventually take the reins and pick up the pieces.

I could not, in good conscience, cast a vote for Hillary (my voting finger would spontaneously combust for sure). But neither will I continue to vote for leftists-in-conservative-clothing. Such imposters have succeeded in re-defining my party, handcuffing their genuine republican counterparts, and corrupting my government beyond recognition.

Exactly how I feel. I won't be voting for any wolves in sheeps clothing, any who work against the Constitution, our nation's sovereignty, and conservatives. I refuse to vote for any person who has the gall to claim they are but "working with the democrats." These betrayers of the Constitution, are destroying this country and are successfully destroying the meaning of conservativism, all in the name of "compromise."

They have long ago compromised: their principles, their oaths of office, this nation, and the PEOPLE of the United States of America.

I won’t vote for McCain....I will write in Ron Paul.

America and its Conservatives have been painted into a corner....which if you check my post record, I predicted back in 2004.

Obama/Hillary will be the next POTUS and America will just have to learn the hard way.

May God Protect us from the coming darkness.
