Republican front-runner John McCain received two endorsements Monday one from GOP stalwart Gary Bauer and the other from a conservative group of Capitol Hill lawmakers indicating growing strength for the candidate among a much needed but reluctant group of voters: conservative Republicans.
McCain has been strafed daily by conservative voices like radio host Rush Limbaugh and former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, and he suffered losses this weekend in two out of three states holding nomination contests in the first one-on-one match-up against rival Mike Huckabee.
But McCain has taken a large lead in the battle for convention delegates, making it almost statistically impossible for Huckabee to take the nomination from McCain.
Still, any help McCain can get from the conservative base of his party who believe strongly in smaller government, abolishing abortion, preventing gay marriage, gun rights and going on the attack against Islamic terrorism is gladly accepted by a man who received a mixed reception from an audience of conservative Republicans last week.
Bauer, in a statement released by McCains campaign, focused on McCains military record and his fight against abortion.
John McCain has dedicated his life to defending human rights around the world, including the rights of the unborn, said Bauer, a former presidential candidate and head of American Values. I admire his consistent 24-year pro-life record and demonstrated commitment to the values that keep our families and communities strong.
John McCain alone has the experience, character and credibility to lead as commander in chief on day one and defeat the transcendent threat of our time radical Islamic extremism. I am proud to support John McCain for president, he said.

In addition to my indisputable observation of recent history......:) I’m amazed by the inability of those who believe themselves to be the torch carriers of conservatism to recognize this.
He presents himself as tough on the war on terror yet he opposes tough measures with respect to the scum we capture, citing the Geneva Convention which clearly does not apply to these people. Also, he favors shutting down Guantanamo and bringing those creatures to America where they will be under the jurisdiction of liberal civil court judges instead of military judges. This is what the media and Dems want and certainly does not reflect the actions of a man who places common sense and the well being of our troops in the field in first place. I believe any reliance on this guy’s behavior, given his erratic past, is doomed to be a failed one.
But you DID hit on the ONLY SINGLE justification for supporting this guy - possible impact on troops in the field.
This is going to be a hard election to figure out with no really good alternatives or answers for conservatives or Real Republicans. I guess judgment will have to be suspended pending the outcome of debates between him and his opponent - whoever that is, and that is probably the best thing I can say about McCain at present.
I am very very worried about America, our Constitution, the war against terrorists, our cultural survival as an Anglocentric and Anglophonic nation and the welfare of our troops in the field.
Things could hardly be worse.
I think John McCain has a lot of personal mental baggage that he was born with, and it was exacerbated by his horrific experience with the fiends at the Hanoi Hilton.
But that is a good question.
See my response to the other poster about McCain.
I don’t know if you realized it but the guy at the far left in that photo was Duncan Hunter during his time in Vietnam.
Thank you. I couldn’t agree more. It’s a hard pill to swallow and yet, without swallowing it.....any hope of recovery will be lost for generations to come.
I believe we all know what needs to be done by Conservatives in the interim. It must be done AND begun without waving the flag of defeat in the process and destroying the MANY gains we’ve made.
As you eluded to, much could happen between now and November that could change the outcome (for better OR worse) but sulking & lashing out is an undeniable waste of time and resource.
No I didn’t. WOW - what a guy.
What a shame he didn’t get nominated. He was the best of them all.
Note the liberal media/Pro-McCain bias in the story, even from allegedly “conservative” Fox News:
“Still, any help McCain can get from the conservative base of his party who believe strongly in smaller government, abolishing abortion, preventing gay marriage, gun rights and going on the attack against Islamic terrorism is gladly accepted...”
No mention how the “conservative base” is just as concerned (and in many cases, even MORE concerned) with STOPPING ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION, KEEPING TAXES LOW, and APPOINTING CONSERVATIVE JUDGES. Odd how these issues are excluded from the story, as it is THESE issues that McCain is foursquare against us and these are deal-breakers for many of us.
The issues of the “conservative base” as stated in this article have been conveniently “cherry-picked” to be the issues McCain happens to be strongest on (from a conservative perspective), so I would venture to guess they came straight from McCain campaign talking points directly to the MSM to put him in a more favorable light and show how “conservative” he really is...
