McClintock jumps from SoCal into Mother Lode congressional race
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 3/4/8 | John Wildermuth

Posted on 03/04/2008 2:36:50 PM PST by SmithL

AUBURN (Placer County) -- Republican state Sen. Tom McClintock took the long jump from his Southern California legislative seat to a congressional race in the Sierra foothills today as he announced that he was running to replace retiring GOP Rep. John Doolittle.

"I've heard your voices, I've heeded your advice," the 51-year-old McClintock told a crowd in front of the 1898 Auburn courthouse.

At least two Republicans weren't calling for McClintock to run in the 4th Congressional District, which includes the Sacramento suburbs of Rocklin and Roseville and the northern half of the Mother Lode.

Doug Ose of Sacramento, who held the neighboring congressional seat from 1998 until his retirement in 2004, had already filed papers to run in the June 3 GOP primary. But now he finds himself in a much tougher contest as a moderate Republican running against one of the state's best-known conservative politicians.

Ose received a boost Tuesday when received the endorsement of former Republican Gov. Pete Wilson, who called Ose "far and away the candidate we can count on to move Congress in the right direction."

McClintock's announcement bounced former state legislator Rico Oller from the race to replace Doolittle. Oller, who had collected a number of local endorsements for his run, dropped out of the contest today and endorsed McClintock.

In a statement to supporters, he said the prospect of splitting the conservative vote with McClintock and delivering the seat to "an unarguably liberal Republican, Doug Ose" was "repugnant to all in which I believe.

"As you might imagine, it is a bitter pill indeed for me to swallow."

McClintock's announcement today was one of the worst-kept secrets in California politics.

Now there's a hero and a true conservative, not to mention a great bear hunter.

Too bad he did not do it years ago. We would have been saved the embarrassment of Doolittle.

Doolittle is ranked near the bottom in power polls in congress..... not much of a factor. Although this is just one district in upstate a victory for conservatives, especially fiscal ones, mean alot as Tom will run circles around the lesser minds in the halls of congress. he will get on major committees and stand up to the likes of Pelosi and Co. who hardlt know half of what they are talking about....

Support Tom, send $$$ !!!

Well, that sounds like a winner to me! It sounds as if the Dems are finished in their opportunity to pick up this seat. I don’t vote in California anymore, but I proudly voted for Tom McClintock when he ran as lieutenant-Governor. I think he’d make a positive addition to the US House of Representatives! Get rid of the corrupt Doolittle!

Great news. Former State Senator Rico Oller, who ran for Congress in the district I live in when it was open, dropped out. Some other guy Englund (sp?) dropped out. It looks like it will be former Congressman Doug Ose and McClintock in the June GOP primary. Much rather have McClintock than the more RINOish Ose. Its funny but the local media is already harping on McClintock being a carpet bagger. Of course no mention was made of Her Majesty being a carpet bagger when she moved to NY just to run for Senate.

Would you please consider not defaming a man who has NEVER been CHARGED with ANYTHING by ANYBODY? The only thing he has ever been guilty of is being too conservative to be tolerated by Karl Rove and the Bush Administration just like Tom Tancredo and Tom Delay!!!

The man retired after the "Justice" department dogged him for years and even raided his private residence and could find NOTHING!!! He was a GREAT conservative Congressman for district four for over two decades!!!

Most of us in this district are NOT ashamed of the job John did for us for all those years. You don't need to keep trying to sully his reputation like hate filled savages any longer!!!

He's gone and now it looks like the CA GOP can only come up with a Rockefeller/Wilsonnegger brand of Repub and a complete carpetbagger who's way too overly cozy with corrupt Indian Gaming Interests and hails from the other end of the state.

The best conservative and the best man for the job would have been Rico Oller who at least has represented people in the stupendously unnecessary Schwartzenegger Sierra-Nevada CONservancy!!! (a Sierra stripped of all private property rights by Schwartzenswindler)

Hey Petey--shut the heck up! Haven't you done enough to destroy this state?

Get rid of the corrupt Doolittle!

A THREE YEAR DOJ WITCHUNT.

...Subpoena after subpoena. Thousands of documents turned over. Computers, filing cabinets, etc.

And not ONE charge of wrong doing.

How about you retract your allegation?

As some legislators have requested of DOJ: PUT UP OR SHUT UP!.

..best wishes to him--he would have my vote were I in that district

With conservative leaders like Tom, Mike Pence and Marsha Blackburn maybe we can begin taking back control of the House--and oh yes, Duncan D. Hunter...

why didn’t he run in Simi Valley and take Gallegly’s place?

Because Gallegly is the quintessential example of an entrenched incumbent. Tom is popular enough that he MIGHT have been able to unseat Gallegly in the primary, but it was politically very risky and it would have cost millions of dollars. The Republican party in Ventura County has a deep split in it, and Elton Gallegly and Tom McClintock on are opposite sides.

Whereas the 4th District seat Tom is running for ought to be a slam dunk for him. The fact that his family already has a house there and they spend much of their time there will mute the carpetbagging issue. With an open seat, and Tom's ability to raise lots of money from the contributors he's cultivated throughout the state during his past races for Governor and Lt. Governor and Controller, he should sweep to victory.

As a Simi Valley resident, I've been fortunate to have had him as my legislative representative in Sacramento. We will all be fortunate to have him in Congress making some waves.

"Why didn’t he run in Simi Valley and take Gallegly’s place?"

Gallegly plans to run as an 11 term incumbent.

Gallegly files for 12th term in Congress
Ventura County Star - February 12, 2008

"Putting an emphatic end to speculation about his political future, Rep. Elton Gallegly on Monday filed papers for re-election less than an hour after the filing period opened for the June 3 primary."

"I paid the fee, and I took the oath," said Gallegly, R-Simi Valley. "And I know what the rules are."

"Confusion over election rules created several days of political chaos two years ago, when Gallegly, just hours before the filing period closed, announced he had decided to retire. He was unaware that a candidate cannot remove his name from the ballot once his filing papers are filed."

"The next week, after meeting with doctors in Washington, D.C., Gallegly said the health concerns that prompted his desire to retire had been resolved and he would actively campaign for his 11th term. He won re-election handily."

"At the time, he said it would be his final term and even invited potential successors to come forward. "I would not be offended if they start campaigning tomorrow," he said then."

"About a year ago, however, Gallegly said he intended to seek a 12th term."

"The conflicting messages about his future had fueled a torrent of rumors and speculation in political circles. By filing on the first day possible, Gallegly, 63, said he wanted to end that speculation once and for all..."
