Thanks Blam. Carausius' regime arose later in the "Thirty Tyrants" period which was brought to end, more or less, by Diocletian. Carausius was also a character in a Rosemary Sutcliff novel I read when I was in my teens (one of a multigenerational series, for kids I suspect), and that's where I first heard of him. He was murdered by one of his underlings, who was overthrown and killed a year or so after that.

Diocletian was a tough bastard, and introduced the face-down prostrate suppliant posture due the emperor, also devised (for the first time ever, oddly enough) a uniform system of succession, split the empire between east and west, then built a large palace in what is now Split (formerly Yugoslavia, not it's in Croatia I think), capable of producing anything needed, just in case the anarchy returned.

To all -- please ping me to other topics which are appropriate for the GGG list.

Amazing when these vestiges of the past are uncovered by time.
