Obama: I'll try that cheesesteak next time

By CATHERINE LUCEY Philadelphia Daily News

luceyc@phillynews.com 215-854-4172 What, no whiz?

Sen. Barack Obama sampled $100 ham, but didn't chow down on a cheesesteak during a visit to the Italian Market yesterday.

During a half-hour tour of the market, Obama sampled wares at Claudio Specialty Food and DiBruno Brothers - where he noshed on a Spanish ham that retails for $99.99 a pound.

Staff at DiBruno's told him the ham only recently became available because it was previously barred by the FDA.

"All I know is it tastes good," Obama said. As good as whiz with onions?

In fact, neither Obama nor Sen. Hillary Clinton, his rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, has made the traditional stop at South Philly cheesesteak establishments Pat's or Geno's.

But Obama last night told a crowd of supporters gathered at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, "I'm going to get a cheesesteak the next time I come."

Clinton spokesman Mark Nevins said he wanted her "to have an opportunity to visit the Philadelphia landmarks, including the great cheesesteak places."

Are cheesesteak stops more risky today than in the past?

Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., was mocked for ordering his sandwich with swiss cheese during his 2004 run for president.

All I see is a CALCULATED MOVE...

Just like Rev Wright was to prove he was "down with the program"...this is to prove he'll eat pig.

When I read his “economic plan” I laughed. His “tax incentive” for keeping businesses in the US is so low that it would not make a dent in a company’s tax burden.

Oh. I thought it said beefcake--thought it was pitch for more gush from Chris Matthews and his ilk.

LOL! If that’s what it takes to win an election then it sounds like I won’t be winning any elections in Philadelphia anytime soon. Cheese Whiz on a cheese steak sub? Just the thought of that makes me want to take a crap...

Too bad John Edwards wasn't there to remind him what kind of ham the other America has to eat...

But any company which is based in the US but is truly international with staff all over the world would be punished so severely by his new plan that they would immediately reorganize as foreign corporations with some US operations which aren't punished. Expect companies like Exxon to cease being US companies if Obama is elected.

I’m from Philly originally and I don’t like the Whiz on my cheesesteak...blech. That’s just a Pat’s thing.

I’m surprised he associates with those awful Italians. After all, Mr Wright preaches that we are garlic nosed people. We are evil white rich Europeans who crucified Jesus.

Glad to know also that when he becomes president everything will turn wonderful overnight. After all, the president controls the economy so all he has to do is snap his fingers I guess.

Cheese Whiz is more likely to be from Dow than a Cow. It might not be according to Philly rules, but I would rather have a real cheese like provolone or even (Kerry haters shudder here) Swiss.

I find it odd that he is running for an office that would put him in charge of the FDA and he just blew off the comment....

Exactly. This man has NO clue as to how business operates. Hell, small business gets the shaft as well under his economic schemes.

Nobody in Philly seems to get the fact that NO restaurants or bakeries from Philly have established any base beyond their core stores, i.e. I can go to at least two different eateries that are from Chicago (Maggiano’s and Pizzeria Uno’s) but when in Chicago I can’t find ANY restaurant/chain from Philly.

Philly don’t help business. Their tax structure prevents success.

Jamon Iberico is incredible and certainly worth trying, but it’s from Spain and doesn’t really have anything to do with Philly.

It’s crazy to go to Philly and not get a cheesesteak (I’ve actually driven to Philly JUST to get a cheesesteak). However, Pat’s and Geno’s are both overrated tourist traps in my opinion, Mama’s Pizzeria has the best cheesesteak I’ve ever had.
