In his first speech since securing the Democratic presidential nomination, Sen. Barack Obama on Wednesday vowed to be tough when it comes to dealing with Iran and promised a strong relationship with Israel, calling for an undivided Jerusalem to be its capital.

Speaking to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, Obama said his stand on dealing with Iran has been mischaracterized, and he pledged to do “everything in my power, everything,” to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.

The Illinois senator has taken heat from presumptive Republican opponent Sen. John McCain for saying he is willing to meet with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, but Obama says diplomacy can be tough. Obama promised to “ratchet up the pressure” on Iran if it refused to cooperate and said continued occupation of Iraq is weakening the U.S. in its dealings with Iran.

Obama said his stand on dealing with Iran has been mischaracterized

He said he would meet with Ahmadinejad without any preconditions.

That's an historical fact.

Obama’s “undivided Jerusalem” is one that is the capitol of Palestine.

I see. So, what’s Mr. Obama going to do, serve the Iranians tea in dirty tea cups? That sounds pretty tough to me.

Someone needs to define secured to Marketwatch.

It will be interesting to match up what he is saying now about Jerusalem with what he has said in the past. Too bad no one will make an issue of it.

Hey Obama, we believed you the first time, when you swore to hold unconditional talks with Iran..probably to discuss with your pal Ahmadinejad, how to carry out his stated aim of wiping Israel off the face of the earth.

So the senate's foremost advocate of Milquetoast Foreign Policy has now declared that he will do "everything in [his] power, everything" to thwart Tehran's obvious nuclear ambitions.

The old cliche, "Talk is cheap," springs to mind. Especially during an election season.

And even more especially when the speaker has recently declared that it would be a peachy-keen idea for the US president to hold hands and sing "Kumbaya" with America's most rabid enemies--or something close to that, anyway.
