Bridegroom Gabriel Watson charged with wife's scuba-dive murder
The Times ^ | June 21, 2008 | Staff

An American tourist was charged with murder yesterday for allegedly drowning his bride of 11 days on a scuba diving trip on the Great Barrier Reef during their honeymoon. Christina Mae Watson, 26, died while diving on a shipwreck near the northeastern Australian city of Townsville while her husband looked on.

Daniel Watson, 31, of Birmingham, Alabama, had claimed during police interviews that his wife had panicked a few minutes into the dive. He said that as she thrashed around in the water, she grabbed hold of his mask and pushed it off his face. He later described seeing her, with her eyes wide and arms stretched out towards him, sink into the deep.

Mr Watson was an experienced diver who had completed a diving rescue course and was acting as a “dive buddy” for his wife, who was a novice. Despite his training, he told police that he decided to go for help rather than attempt to rescue his wife. One of the leaders of the dive trip pulled Mrs Watson to the surface, but attempts to resuscitate her failed.

That was a good idea. The turning off air is really good.We do this sometimes in the dive classes I teach in.

Did you bother to read any of the evidence I sited? Stop being a buffoon. I have been diving for decades and I know a bs story when I hear one - directly out of the defendant’s mouth! His computer does not match his story. Not to mention his other bs about his first aborted dive because of batteries in backwards in his computer. Oh yeah, that’s right; you don’t know what I mean by that because you don’t dive and you didn’t hear his story straight out of his mouth.
You are wrong. Let it go.

Yes, I do dive. Some of us get along fine with tables, not computers. Yes he could be guilty.

Nobody will ever know exactly what happened except for two people, one's dead, and at least one of them was incompetent at their rating.

When he's convicted or exonerated I will be able to let it go, either way.

Seems like you will be vindicated if found guilty, and you'll be beside yourself and unable to live with a 'miscarriage of justice' if he's found not guilty.

I'm not willing to tie my own sanity up to a court like that.

Why do women marry lousy men? Is being alone that horrible that you would rather live with a scumbag than being by yourself? I don’t get it.

Guys like this are sociopaths - very good at playing normal over the short term. Add to that a woman's desperation to get married and a willingness to see what she wants to see in a man, and you have all the ingredients for disaster.

I helped my friend quite a few times. He always had a dive master as well so I was just along to help out and watch. My friend and instructor drilled us pretty hard and nobody ever got a free ride.

He once went on a ride with a young lady who bolted from 100ft. They both managed to survive without ill effects most likely because of his efforts to slow her. He told her to stay out of the water after that. If you’re wondering she was already certified and working to her adv cert. Didn’t have enough dives for it though.

We don’t have to know exactly. We just have to know beyond a reasonable doubt.

True. He may very well be guilty. I sure as he!! wouldn’t dive with him, because he’s either a murderer or incompetent.

The problem is that anything an ABCCBSNBC magazine show wants you to believe, is something I automatically am skeptical of! (like for example...Haditha.)

So that’s a reasonable doubt so far, until the verdict.

I wouldn’t believe ABC either. however if they have video of the other divers saying something was wrong I would believe the other divers.

Can I assume that you’ll keep an eye on developments in this case and ping us all back to see how it progresses?

Slight update but not a whole lot of new info. one change is the original posting indicated they didn’t know where hubby went. He’s in Alabama.
