The wrong woman was given a chemical abortion tablet after a nurse mixed up two patients with the same first name, a misconduct hearing heard today.
Ann Downer gave the drug to the woman who had only gone into her clinic for an initial consultation.
She had not decided to have a termination when the nurse gave her the drug.
When staff realised what had happened the distraught woman was called back to the clinic in pain and doctors subsequently advised her to undergo a surgical abortion.
Miss Downer, 44, should have administered the drug to a second patient who was in the later stages of a chemical termination, the Nursing and Midwifery Council was told.
The first woman attended the Calthorpe Clinic in Edgbaston, Birmingham - which offers abortion, sterilisation and vasectomy - in October, 2006.
Another patient with the same name was due to have the drugs for the second stage of her medical abortion, only undertaken on women who have been pregnant for less than nine weeks.
The clinic's usual practice was to only call out first names of patients to protect their confidentiality while in the waiting room.

Looks as though ambulance chasing personal injury barristers will be flocking upon the hospital in droves.
Beyond horrible
PC run amok again...damn HPPA!
And...the cutting costs of medical service. I bet that wasn’t even a nurse...a Med Assistant..which requires only a high school education.
And well they should.
Negligent homicide.
She applied the “one size fits all” solution to “breeders’ problems”.
They have HPPA in Great Britain?
Obama will bring you hope and socialized medicine.
This WAS an abortion clinic.
This woman deserves compensation for what was done to her. Hospitals have insurance to cover mistakes like this. It’s the liars and creeps who shouldn’t get a penny for their fraudulent claims. I would have gone crazy if they did this to my wife and baby.
Sounds like this was a clinic. It was in Britain. Why did the lady take the medication if she was only there for a consult? Did she ask what it was for?
Sorry, she should never have taken something without knowing what it was.
The person who gave it to her was wrong. You may not call someone’s name across a room, but you ask for ID, or you check the ID before you medicate them.
There were several errors made here. I don’t think the lady who was medicated is faultless here, unless there’s something that goes beyond what I read.
Folks, never ever take a medication or allow a medication to be give to you unless you know what it is, and what it is for. You have every right to object, and if things don’t sound right, they probably aren’t.
Ultimately, you are the last fail safe. If you’re not able to take charge of your own situation, let a reasoned rational family member stand in to protect your interests.
Wow, and only a probation for the nurse.
Who said there are scarce health care resources in Britain’s NHS?
This lady got more treatment than she wanted.
I’m not sure, I would think so, under a different name for the law.
knock knock
who’s there?
HPPA
HPPA who?
I can’t tell you that.
oops, they killed the wrong baby. Now they’re going to have to make it right and kill the other one, you know this, right?
shaking head
I have to agree with you. If she was there for an initial consultation and decided not to abort, she dang sure should have been asking ‘Why are you giving me medicine???’ before just taking it. Usually when you go in for counseling/consultation for anything, you wouldn’t be taking meds an hour later.
It was an ABORTION CLINIC. She took the medicine why??
My comment was not well put. What was done in my eyes was murder. The fact the woman whom it was done to was not a willing accomplice does not change the fact that it was still murder. My point was that the only recourse that she was going to have was going to be civil. Personally, I view the act as criminal, probably and should be treated as some type of homicide or manslaughter. Their should be criminal consequences, then the stage is set for civil damages. But sadly, it will be all about the lawyers and they hospital will settle, and the living soul who will never take a breath will suffer the indignity of never having a day in court.
Unfortunately for this woman, because of the country where this occurred, if she were to get simple extrajudicial satisfaction they'd put her in jail anyway.
