Colin Powell in McCain mix
Politco ^ | August 23, 2008 | Mike Allen

Posted on 08/23/2008 7:17:50 PM PDT by Plutarch

Retired Gen. Colin Powell is among the potential running mates who have been considered by John McCain, campaign advisers told Politico.

Powell was among the possible vice presidential choices the Arizona Republican senator was thinking of when he said he would not rule out a supporter of abortion rights, a key adviser said.

Campaign officials say McCain has told them not to discuss the process.

Powell, who was President Bush's first secretary of state, would add celebrity to the ticket, as well as reinforce McCain's strength as a potential commander in chief, which his campaign considers to be one of his chief assets.

But outside advisers say they believe former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, a McCain rival for the Republican nomination, is the leading candidate.

McCain plans to announce his choice Friday in Dayton, Ohio.

"Powell, who was President Bush's first secretary of state, would add celebrity to the ticket..."

Powell, who was President Bush's first secretary of state, would add celebrity race to the ticket...

There I fixed it. It would be 1 more affirmative action perk for Powell, and another reason to vote for Barr.

I wouldn’t be opposed to this. I might actually not sit home and get out to vote for McCain.

Yeah, I don’t either. Abortion is on low on my priority list of things that need to be done to fix this Nation.

Powell was a very good General, but only a mediocre SECSTATE. I’m unsure about his ability to be a good VP based on my view of him at the STATE Department.

Actually should read low on my priority list of issues that need to be addressed.

"...and another reason to vote for Barr."

WOW !
That puts Barr up to 75 or 80 votes now doesn't it?

He would do far better to select a female VP and woo some of Hillary’s disgruntled supporters.

McCain can't be that crazy to make Powell his VP. Heck Powell is most likely voting for Obama because he is black. Besides, Powell is a Democrat pretending to be a Republican - anyone KNOWS that.

Mitt needs to be the one. Without Mitt, he won't win.

Because he needs a real conservative to try and offset his liberal policies, McCain would never pick Powell.

This is BS.

I wonder if anyone has asked Gen. Powell if he /wants/ the job. As I recall, he said rather strongly that he has no intention of getting into the POTUS race. My guess is that would apply to vice POTUS also.

IMHO, there are worse VP choices than Colin Powell... and also a lot of better choices.

I decided a while back I would hold my nose and pull the lever for Mr. McCain. Colin Powell as VP wouldn’t change my opinion of the McCain ticket either way.

You make a very good point. Nancy Pelosi might like it though as she is behind the VP in order of succession.

you better get out and vote. I don’t want to be stuck with a socialistic commander and chief who will reverse the progress my comrades and I have made in the ME.

“I really don’t get the hate for powell.”

He's not right for the job. It's not about hate.

If you want it to be about “hate” go seek our some Evangelical about Mitt - there you will find fear and hate.

Colin Powell is a great American patriot and would lock it up for McCain.
