Let me guess. There was a large meteorite that struck off the coast of the Carolinas. The resulting big splash caused huge drops of water to create the little craters in the coastal soil. Am I right?

It’s plausible. One problem with that is they are very shallow.

The modern concensus among soil scientists (of which I am one,and I have spent many years working in Carolina Bays) and geomorphologists, is that the Bays are deflation basins, and are not related to bolide impact.
