Some of my ancestors first arrived in Texas in the late-1840's and served with McCord's Texas Cavalry during the War of Northern Aggression (ie Civil War), with others moving there from Georgia shortly after the war.

My great-grandfather, "Tall" Jim Treadwell, was killed during the Galveston Hurricane of 1915. He was a conductor on the Galveston-Houston Interurban Electric, the railroad the ran between the two cities. They were trying to evacuate some of the women and children off the island when they were caught on the causeway by the storm surge. The train was knocked off its tracks by the surge, but remained on the causeway.

The other two men onboard took off running, but my great-grandfather stayed behind to try and rescue the women and kids. He took the emergency brake rope, tied it to everyone, and then started dragging them through the water.

People on shore saw them about 100-200 feet out, but before anyone could head out to help them, a huge wave washed them away. Their bodies were found three days later.

My grandfather was nine months old at the time of his father's death. When he turned eighteen, he changed his name to James to honor his father's legacy.

Here are two pictures of my great-grandfather's train.

Thank you so much for sharing this part of your family history. God Bless your great-grandfather for his attempts to rescue the women and children, at the cost of his own life. You must be so proud.

"How is your friend doing?"

My friend is coming along as well as the docs predicted. She is still on pain pills, (but weaning off them), she walks very slow, and sleeps most of the time (but when she is asleep, she isn't in pain, which I am greatful for!)

She just had her three month post-op check-up and the doctor told her in another three months, she should start feeling a little better. But, he also told her she needs a total hip replacement. Poor kid. We're gonna get her through this.......

We’ll just keep praying that her strength continues to return and that she gets to feeling better so she can have that hip replacement. She is SO lucky to have a friend like you!

(((hugs)))

I am. He inspired my grandfather to reach for great heights, and my grandfather, in turn, has inspired me.

I was hoping to get down to Galveston next spring to visit the city's railroad museum and see if they have any info on my great-grandfather, but it looks like that might be on hold for a while.

The University of Houston's library has a section devoted to the 1915 hurricane, so it might be worth the trip just to visit there and see what they have. The pictures I posted are from their collection.

There is a book about the Galveston-Houston Interurban Electric that was published back in 1972. I found a copy on Abe Books and am currently awaiting its arrival.

Hi, Kathy.

Sorry I’m a bit late. (Are Texans known to be punctual? I’m only 32%, BTW.)
