Even as Congress moves to bail out Wall Street, congressional Democrats called Thursday for billions more in taxpayer dollars to be spent on private shipyards, a new Department of Homeland Security headquarters and hybrid car batteries - all to get the economy going.
As part of their massive new spending plan, Senate Democrats also proposed continuing a ban on U.S. oil shale, a resource Republicans said leaves hundreds of millions of barrels of oil off limits, just a day after the House agreed to lift a ban on oil shale exploration.
Those are all part of a $56.2 billion economic stimulus package Democrats in the Senate have crafted and are considering attaching to a must-pass stopgap measure to keep the government running past Sept. 30, when the fiscal year ends. As of Thursday evening, they had not made a final decision.
"We must not forget Main Street as we work to address the crisis on Wall Street," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat. "Democrats believe that we must urgently pass another economic recovery package that will create hundreds of thousands of good-paying American jobs and prevent cuts in critical services for millions of Americans."
Republicans, though, said by extending the oil shale moratorium, Democrats are leaving some good jobs on the table.
"Senator Reid's move to reinstate the ban on oil shale energy production is an insult to the American people and yet another example of Democrats acting to make energy more expensive for working families and small businesses," said House Minority Leader John A. Boehner, Ohio Republican.
The stimulus spending package is on top of a $630 billion stop-gap measure the House passed Wednesday and which is now pending in the Senate. That bill must be passed before Oct. 1 . . .

Your schemes are going down, 9 percent Congress.
Bella Pelosi can’t be broke - she still has checks left.

Harry Reid has no idea where American mainstreet is. It is my personal opinion Harry Reid should be arrested for his part on the financial meltdown.
Heck, at this point they might as well fund the Bridge to Nowhere.
As if anybody would notice, or even care.

Once the White House opened the door to Socialism, the door cannot be closed.
I say...stop the gap...vote against it and save us all 25% of the budget allocation until they get their collective heads pulled out of their collective arses.
It is pile on the pork time.........
Is there anyway we can plan a bomb drop on Capital Hill when only democrats are there? Honestly, can anybody see any other way to get the communists out of our pockets?
Lest we forget that our illustrious President and Wall Street insider 600 million dollar Goldman Sachs man are the ones who proposed this mess!!

Wow. Thank you.
The only thing that this I’d add is that it is in large part through ACORN that Obama and the socialists/Marxists orchestrated this fiasco.
They may have even known the result, hoping for Socialist takeover of mortgage banking — and depression — and subsequent, orchestrated unrest....
So we have the Democrats in Congress (with the 9% approval rating) who created this mess trying to shove this monster down our throats, which would ultimately save Wall Street’s bacon and pay off quite handsomely for the country’s richest (or 2nd richest, I forget and frankly don’t care) man. This plan, of course, has been proposed by the administration of a president who we are reminded, constantly, is unpopular (though strangely not as unpopular as the Democrat controlled Congress, which, of course we are not reminded thereof).
The senior Senator from Arizona has a prime opportunity to derail this unpopular proposal and take a stand for the American taxpayer, while also at the same time forcing Wall Street to pay for its own mistakes and free to condemn the scarcely popular Congress for their ever willingness to go along with this cockamamie scheme and hang additional frivolous spending on top of it.
Make no mistake, Senator McCain is going to gain the respect, admiration, and, yes, votes of those of us who are sick and tired of Washington bending over to satisfy those on Wall Street and the lunatic fringe. The Senator has checkmated these actors and is about to reap the rewards.
But how will this also help true conservative candidates for Congress in ‘08 and beyond successfully increase their total numbers in all future Congressional terms? It truly continues to bother me that the Democrats will probably still be able to increase their total numbers in Congress in both the next House and in the next Senate, despite their low approval numbers!

He ain’t the only one who proposed it. There ain’t an illegal lovin’, poor ni#### lovin’ politican who didn’t think it was the politically correct way to go.
I basically think we should take the whole lot of em out behind the tool shed and shoot them, so I really don’t care who proposed it, it only care about who opposes it. The bailout is socialism fast-tracked if you ask me.
