Both my great grandfathers were Confederate soldiers so both sides of the family were here during slavery days but they must have been too poor to afford slaves. I have only heard of two black men who share my last name and I don’t think I have ever heard of one who has my mother’s last name. The truth is that only a small minority of white southerners owned slaves, many of the poor whites were actually worse off than the average slave. There are plenty of stories about house slaves and even field hands looking down on the poor whites of the time and calling them “white trash” or other names. I am sick and tired of people who have never been slaves trying to make me feel guilty as if I myself were a slave owner today.
