Four of five S.D. Congress members vote against bailout (Cheney Lobbied Hunter)
San Diego Union Trib ^ | 9/29/08 | George E. Condon Jr. and Finlay Lewis

WASHINGTON – Undeterred by heavy lobbying and threats of reprisals, four out of five members of San Diego County's congressional delegation voted against the Wall Street bailout hammered out by the Bush administration and the bipartisan leadership of the Congress.

Only Rep. Susan Davis, D-San Diego, voted for the $700 billion plan. Voting against was Democrat Bob Filner of San Diego and Republicans Duncan Hunter of Alpine, Darrell Issa of Vista and Brian Bilbray of Carlsbad.

For Hunter, who is retiring, the measure presented perhaps the last big vote of his 28 years in Congress. And the administration trained one of its big guns on him to pressure him for his vote.

Vice President Dick Cheney personally appealed for Hunter's support. But Hunter said he told Cheney he could not because the measure amounted to a “massive exposure for the American taxpayer for what's at best a very limited return.”

“He said he appreciated my rationale and that he disagreed with it,” Hunter said. “Over the years we've had a lot of conversations on important issues. A lot of the time we agree; a lot of the time we don't.”

For Issa, the stakes were particularly high, as he angered the Republican leadership and threatened his hopes to become chairman or ranking minority on a key House committee.

As Hunter said earlier, "it brings us one step closer to a nationalized economy."

"There are certainly steps Congress should take to address the current condition of our financial and housing markets, but a taxpayer funded bailout of Wall Street is definitely not one of them."

I’m just hoping that some of those “no” votes don’t get skittish and turn to yes. I know Hunter’s won’t.

I’m glad pissant’s lobbying is more effective than Cheney’s. LOL

For any of our congressmen who defect, I can picture a great letter to the editor of a paper in their district. Something like:

“I was delighted to learn that Comrade (name) decided to vote in support of the principles of the glorious Proletariat. The evil bourgeoisie in our government keep battling against confiscation of taxpayer dollars for the nationalization of industries, but not Comrade (name)! We delight in seeing him lead the People’s Revolution to swell our government with state-run enterprises and to fight against the tyranny of the free market. Onward, Comrade (name)!”

Kind of pointless, where I live, though; my rep would probably wear the label “Comrade” with pride.

I must admit that is a great temptation. If McCain pulls his head out of the liberal sand, I might reconsider. I won’t hold my breath though.

I think the thing that bothers me most is the apparent feeling that the people trying to pass off the crap samich thought they could simply bypass the American people. Fortunately Duncan Hunter is one of those who listens to us. Happily my congressman (Walberg) also voted against it.

They may have tried, but judging by the meltdown of their phone system and their website, I don’t think they succeeded.

With all the confusion and spin...it’s very reassuring to know a true patriot voted against the bailout.

Carry on.
