The ink is barely dry on this mornings paper and the Obama camp is already hinting that Gen. Colin Powell could play a pivotal role in an Obama administration.
The cynic would say that was exactly what was intended with yesterdays endorsement. Gen. Powell saw the writing on the wall, and figured he better get while the gettin was still good.
I disagree. Colin Powell is an admired friend; one whom I know rises above the political winds and the spoils of victory. If what the cynics say were true, wed be addressing him as President Powell in the wake of the successful Gulf War.
But as much as I admire and respect him, Powell made the wrong choice yesterday. Unless hes changed his party affiliation, Gen. Powell is still a Republican, and Sen. Obama is as liberal as they come. Just ask yourself this: If there were a white liberal Democrat running for president against McCain, would Gen. Powells decision been any different? Would his announcement on "Meet the Press" been any less prominent? The point is its easy to get caught up in the potential significance of this election, and I think thats what happened with Gen. Powell.
I cant say I didnt have similar feelings myself. Sure, when Obama first came on the scene, I felt that sense of history being made. I still do. But theres so much more that makes a man (or woman) right for the highest office in the land, and frankly, its those doubts that should have caused Gen. Powell to give further pause to his decision.
As electrifying as President Obama would be, how quickly would that luster wear off should the winter months bring a greater Afghanistan threat? Or the Russians wade deeper into the former Soviet republics? You have to imagine the worlds tyrants will test Obama from day one.
The Illinois state Senate is not the Oval Office. And Gen. Powell would have done well to remember that you dont put your greenest soldiers on the front lines in the heat of battle.
This is where Armstrong's point jumps the shark. Regardless of how Powell is legally registered anyone who states the Supreme Court does not need anymore strict constuctionalists, as Powell said Sunday, is NOT a Republican. There are many "types" of Republicans but I think we all agree the court's role is not to legislate.
Let’s see...young, charismatic, inexperienced, proposing big changes, and promising big results and government checks for all of friends. No sir, there’s no reason at all we should expect to feel disappointed later.
Good to see Armstrong turning around... last i could remember I could have sworn he said on hanity that he would vote for obama precisely cause he was black... or at least thats what he hinted to... said he’d have a really hard time not voting for obama... even though he didn’t agree with him on anything... but this sounds good, looks like some of the black conservatives are coming around... i was getting worried when I started noticing some men I really respected starting to make some really sad statements leading to the conclusion they would go for obama...
I think that Powell is a Karl Rove mole setting up for Obama’s administration.
Williams should remember this general, who is supporting McCain
General Schwarzkopf's offensive operational plan, called Operation Desert Storm (co-authored with his deputy commander, Lieutenant General Cal Waller and others on his staff), was the "left hook" strategy that went into Iraq behind the Iraqi forces occupying Kuwait and was widely credited with bringing the ground war to a close in just four days. He was personally very visible in the conduct of the war, giving frequent press conferences, and was dubbed "Stormin' Norman."After the war, Schwarzkopf was bestowed an honorary corporal in the French Foreign Legion, the first and only American to be so honored.
Big talk from somebody who's been here a week.
I agree TC!
Gooch, dude! You have not a clue whom you are speaking to here.
Half the FReepers are Marines, wives of Marines, children of Marines, Former Marines and families, future Marines.....
Need I go on?
Oh, and BTW. It’s FReepers, not FREEPERS.
Thanks.
And parents of Marines!
It’s true, though, that Armstrong Williams has been very wavering in recent years. Maybe he always was. Sometimes he has notable impressive observations and insights, and sometimes you just think, “Huh?”
Boo-yah!
In the interest of accuracy and respect for the Corps, we are parents of a recruit. We expect that in thirteen weeks, we will be parents of a Marine!
Thanks for the correction. I’ll pray for the recruit!
It is about racism.
We appreciate that
