Stevens trailing in Alaska Senate race (down by 800 votes)
Yahoo News ^

Republican Sen. Ted Stevens, the titan of Alaska politics convicted of felony charges last month, fell behind by more than 800 votes Wednesday as the count resumed in his re-election bid.

Democrat Mark Begich, the two-term mayor of Anchorage, began the day down more than 3,200 votes but went up by 814 as officials resumed their counting of early and absentee ballots. The tally was 132,196 to 131,382.

Neither side was claiming victory or conceding defeat, with tens of thousands of outstanding ballots.

"I've always said that this would be a close race," Begich said in a statement. "I'm confident that Alaskans, like the rest of the country, want a new direction in Washington, and ultimately that will be reflected in the results."

Stevens' campaign did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

These are the actual votes still being counted, not an actual recount yet, correct? Like what is happening in Minnesota? Image and video hosting by TinyPic
If Hanging Chads Dude shows up in either state, I'm gonna know for sure the fix is in!! I just hope the Republicans put up a fight to make sure all the votes are legal!

Can Stevens take office after a conviction, even if he wins? Or is it just that if he wins, Governor Palin (R) will get to name his replacement?

Stevens is a convicted felon. It’s a disgrace that the election is even close.

Poorly written story.

Democratic challenger Mark Begich is ahead by three votes in his bid to oust incumbent Alaska Senator Ted Stevens, according to the state's elections division.

A LOT of people in Alaska do not believe he got a fair trial.

SO, they voted for him, I know of several folks who would vote for “anything but MArk” as Beg-ich is so disliked.

IF Ted loses his appeal for a new trial, I’m sure he will step down and a special election will be heald, in which all of the local (R) egos (as many as 5) will run, spiltting the vote and giving to Mark - this time ‘fair and square’ (in the usual Alaskan stupid party way)

Believe whatever you want. The fact is he’s a convicted felon.

Never have I been so depressed in my life. Recession, my party completely out of power. I’ve lived my entire cognizant life happily under Republican rule. I just want to be left alone. Goddamn democrats and the idiot college kids who vote for them to steal other people’s money.

Hang in. Having gone through the Carter years and economy, this country will survive in spite of the sh**bag politicians. Basically the entire 70’s decade was a crap sandwich.

Don’t get me wrong, this is shaping up to be a real bad time in our history but I’m not cashing in the chips yet.

it’s a bit hypocritical to accuse begich of stealing the election when stevens himself is a crook

It wouldn’t bother me to have a convicted white collar felon win as long as it prevents having 60 dems in the senate.

Every wonder how many dems would be felons if held to the same standards as reublicans?

Once we can accept that we can become ass-kickers.

Are you sure that isn’t the race in MN? I believe Frankin is ahead by only 3 votes.

This is far worse than Carter. Consider the fact that the US Gov’t, under a Republican President, purchased huge equity positions in all of our largest financial institutions, and are about to bail-out a while host of failing businesses with YOUR money.
