For Conservative Radio, Its a New Dawn, Too By BRIAN STELTER
Amid all the pressures on the radio industry, news-talk stations see an opportunity and his name is Barack Obama.
After eight years of playing defense for President Bush, the conservatives who dominate talk radio are back on offense.
Hours after Mr. Obamas election, the countrys most popular radio host, Rush Limbaugh, was talking about the rebirth of principled opposition.
Sean Hannity, the second highest-rated host, quickly cast his afternoon show as the home of conservatism in exile.
It is a lively time to be behind the microphone. One television talker, Joe Scarborough, is starting a radio show. Another, Bill OReilly, is ending his.
Several of the supporting actors in this years Republican primary are showing interest in the medium, too. Fred Thompson, the Law & Order star turned presidential candidate, will begin hosting a two-hour show in March, as the syndicator Westwood One is expected to announce this week. Mr. Thompsons show would take the place of Mr. OReillys.
Rudolph W. Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City and a Republican presidential candidate, had been in negotiations with Westwood One for Mr. OReillys time slot, according to two people with knowledge of the talks who spoke on the condition of anonymity because a deal was not struck.

Rush probably has more listeners than the NYT has subscribers.
conservative radio didn’t really have a Presidential candidate to vote for. They were all strongly against Obama, but it is tough to win by saying, vote for our guy, he’s not the worst guy on the ballot. No conservative message was articulated at all, and no defense of anything in the past eight years just sewed it up for BO. McCain’s ads with him stating ‘the last eight years were bad’ was the worst thing I have ever seen in politics. No defense on the WOT. No defense of good tax policy. They just tried to circumvent the ‘change’ mantra, and it was pathetic. The more I think about the inept campaign put on my the McCain team, the more annoyed I get.
Let's correct that mis-statement:
After eight years of playing defense for President Bush fighting liberal leaning, big spending, big government advocate President Bush, and the RINO'S in his administration and congress conservatives who dominate talk radio are back still on offense.
Laura Ingrahm did not promote anyone, Rush stopped the GWB pushing after 2006 election, hannity is the worst, even Levin hurt his credibility with McCain cheer leading, and endless GWB praise.
In Los Angeles, conservatives lost a voice last week when Larry Elder (who coined the term “victocrat”) was replaced with an Obama supporter on KABC, at 790 kilocycles on the AM dial.
The problem was the product they were trying to sell. It's hard for conservatives to get enthusiastic over a candidate who holds them in contempt.
Ain’t *THAT* the truth.
bump for later
Think bailout. Obama bails out the main stream media because the MSM is too important to a free society (sic).
I think from now on, whenever we conservatives hear the MSM blatantly lie or obfuscate or manipulate facts to fit their world view, we respond with shoes...like with a big ol’ fat graphic of shoes being thrown at them.
The left has long had a heavily subsidized presence. Have you heard about NPR and PBS? The reason that left wing talk radio is not successful is NPR. Take away NPR and left wing talk radio will grow.
Rudy would be better as Governor of NY. I know for sure I’d prefer him over Patterson. We’re gonna be hit real hard because they won’t dare fix the problem the right way.
I would normally say quite soon, based on its balance sheet. But if bailout mania continues after January 20, the NYT will top the list.
The past year has been an abomination.
She softballs libs.
That Arnold groupie is a parrot, not a conservative.
LOL. I rented a car in Detroit once and the radio was tuned to AA. I listened for a while to see what it was about, and was impressed about two things: (1) the sheer boredom it induced, and (2) the poor research and substitution of innuendo and ad hominem for any real information.
Now, there is a lot of #2 in conservative talk radio also (Saturday, I heard the most moronic conversation I've ever heard on radio with Hannity talking to some economist), but there is one heck of a lot of information, also. I tell my liberal friends that they need to listen, just to get the information.
STEVE MALZBERG IS GREAT TOO!
RE “She softballs libs”
I have seen her go pretty hard. When poor Tony Snow was on her program told to sell amnesty she gave him hell, “NO ONE BELIEVES YOU TONY, NO ONE”, She gets some pretty impressive guests, and it depends on who they are,
The other hosts dont get many guests but they seem to be owned by their republican regulars. Rush gets Cheney but Rush was owned by Cheney and Bush until 2006 disaster.
I remember Savage sucking up to Schumer a few years back on his show, never seen Laura do that!
