“We just got a new Trane furnace with the super-filter; we may survive the ashfall. Food is a different matter.”

Not with very deep ash.

I was 300 miles away from Mt. St. Helen's. We only got enough ash three times to say we got ash. Enough to wipe your finger on the hood of the car and see the mark.

By the way....do not do that as the little shards of glass will scratch the paint, or so I was told.

I had a great deal of trouble breathing. It made my very tired and sleepy to be outside.

We could see a glow in the sky, but it was not magma, just the particles in the air and the sun shinning through it.

I’m in a 2 story house, and atop a high ridge.
Yet, I’m thinking of mimicking the Mormon level of household food stuffs.
