Since only one side of the Moon has been facing Earth for its entire 4 billion or so year history, of course the crust on that side will be different gravitationally from the far side. Earth’s gravity has been tugging on it all that time.

First thing I though of too. Got this big ol’ ball of gravity tugging on it from one side and nothing on the other side.
