Freedom in the 50 States: An Index of Personal and Economic Freedom
Mercatus Center at George Mason University ^ | February 26, 2009 | Jason Sorens, William P. Ruger

This paper presents the first-ever comprehensive ranking of the American states on their public policies affecting individual freedoms in the economic, social, and personal spheres.

[snip]

This study improves on prior attempts to score economic freedom for American states in three primary ways:
(1) it includes measures of social and personal freedoms such as peaceable citizens’ rights to educate their own children, own and carry firearms, and be free from unreasonable search and seizure;
(2) it includes far more variables, even on economic policies alone, than prior studies, and there are no missing data on any variable; and
(3) it uses new, more accurate measurements of key variables, particularly state fiscal policies.

[snip]

We find that the freest states in the country are New Hampshire, Colorado, and South Dakota, which together achieve a virtual tie for first place.
All three states feature low taxes and government spending and middling levels of regulation and paternalism.

New York is the least free by a considerable margin, followed by New Jersey, Rhode Island, California, and Maryland.

On personal freedom alone, Alaska is the clear winner, while Maryland brings up the rear.

The data used to create the rankings are publicly available online at www.statepolicyindex.com, and we invite others to adopt their own weights to see how the overall state freedom rankings change.

[Note: By clicking on the "statepolicyindex" link you have the ability to download the PDF File of the study and see graphs and a great map color coding the levels of freedom for each state.]

The invasion of other states’ liberals and illegal aliens has been killing Colorado.

Maybe this economic collapse will slow the feeding of their Marxists projects.

I see a political likeness with these "bottom ten" states...

So do I...what was surprising to me were the 3 that were in the top 10 in both catagories.

This reminds of the so called best cities to live in.

I agree...but it is interesting to see what they are basing this stuff on.

I don’t know about NH with the exception of so many well off gays moving there from California the past 4-6 years to make California look moderate after they get through with NH.

From CA? I thought they were just coming up from MA! Are they part of the Free State Project?
I was trying to move up there, but things never worked out.

“From CA? I thought they were just coming up from MA! Are they part of the Free State Project?”

No, they are 50 to 60 year old gays with money to buy homes, farms and BB’s. Once there they push the gay agenda re marriage and health/legal benefits.

In the 1980-90’s, people like them moved to liberal enclaves like Ashland, Eugene and Portland Oregon, similiar places in New Mexico and Colorado and changed the political landscape locally and often statewide.

NH in this decade became a target state. They would sell their California homes at a great profit and move with the money to NH.

As posted before today, the economic collapse may be like helpful virus to root out illegals and other worthless liberals on the dole.

Gadzooks, big, you know the so-called average of $19,617 in Texas will buy a hell of a lot more than the top dogs (pun intended!) of Connecticut's $28,766 or your home sweet home Mudderland&rsquo's $25,614

Plus you can arm yourself... to your heart's content down here!

i don’t think it is that difficult a differentiation.

abortion should be illegal not because it is evil, but becuase it imepedes on the most basic personal freedom of the baby.
