Years ago when the vents on Kilauea went off at Pu'u O'o, Pu‘u Halulu, Pu‘u Kahaualea, and Pu‘u Kamoamoa there were thunder and lightning storms that blacked out large areas in Puna. One storm knocked out the power grid for several days, lightning strikes on electric poles with condensers and even tall Alexandra palms throughout the area.

There maybe correlation with the acidic air borne particulate matter and ejecta that made the normally occurring storm worse but I've seen nothing on this from the USGS locally or the electric company assessment of the phenomena.
