What does ISD stand for? I get that it’s a school district but what is the “I?”

ISD ... I think it originally (and still does) stand for Integrated School District.

ISD = Independent School District

All Texas school districts use this.

Fort Worth Independent School District. The majority of districts in Texas end with “ISD”.

We have Independent, Consolidated, Common, and Consolidated Independent districts. There are even one or two that are called Municipal districts, but they are all pretty much Independent School districts under the Texas Education Agency.

As others have pointed out, it stands for "Independent". But it means a "full service" school district. Kindergarten through 12th grade. Some districts in rural areas, are (or were) only K-8. Their students would then need to go to a nearby "cooperating" ISD for high school.

I have 3 or 4 cousins that went to that sort of K-8, actually back then 1-8 school district. So did my mother and her siblings as well as my father-in-law, but I don't know if the latter two were separate districts, or if they were part of a larger district. (Those were not in Texas, but while the terminology was different, the principle is the same).

There are not many, if any, non ISDs left in Texas, because the pressure has been for the K-8 districts to merge with other K-8s, to form an ISD, with a high school, or with a nearby (which might mean 10s of miles) ISD.
