I wouldn’t think the Vatican would want that. Put’s them in charge of defending them.

It could be because the RC Church has its own city-state(the Vatican), also because it is the largest Christian church which would favor having the Christian shrines turned over. Plus also it is the oldest church and the mother church of all the other Christian churches.
