"A white fraternity that traces its roots to the Civil War and Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee..."

Then they should honor his memory by furling that banner and putting away those uniforms. Without doubt Gen. Robert E. Lee himself would have so ordered it. That banner has no place in the public square. As a Southerner and Virginian, I detest the modern day Johnny Reb wannabes who cloak themselves in the old battle standard and make wildly exaggerated claims of how their "great granddaddy fought at Chicamauga..." Confederate Cpl. Sam Watkins, Co. "H" 1st Tenn. Vols. fought in every major engagement of the Civil War. At it's conclusion he put it this way: "We are now one and indivisible. Now and forevermore." Good enough for me. Should be good enough for the rest of you Johnny Reb wannabes.

A fine sentiment from Watkins who often showed a healthy disrespect for the pretensions of the day. And nothing is more pretentious today than the moonlight and magnolias model of the Confederacy. Life was fine for Ashley Wilkes, but not so much for the ordinary southerner who had to pick up the tab for the aristocracy in blood and poverty.
