Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele said Friday that President Obama has not been vetted thanks to a complicit media that wanted to see a black man become president.
Serving as a guest host for conservative radio personality Bill Bennett, Steele, who is also African-American, said Obama's political philosophy and principles remain largely unknown.
"He was not vetted, folks," Steele said. "He was not vetted because the press fell in love with the black man running for the office.
" 'Oh, gee, wouldn't it be neat to do that? Gee, wouldn't it make all of our liberal guilt just go away? We can continue to ride around in our limousines and feel so lucky to live in an America with a black president,' " Steele said, mocking what he sees as a biased media.
"OK, that's wonderful, great scenario, nice backdrop," the chairman continued. "But what does he stand for? What does he believe?"
Steele went on to suggest the media should have examined the influence the Rev. Jeremiah Wright had on Obama.
Steele has been on the receiving end of similar suggestions that he has advanced up the political ladder because of race. Having started off as chairman of the Prince George's County Republican Party and the Maryland Republican Party, then serving as lieutenant governor of Maryland, Steele became a frequent guest on cable news channels and a repeat speaker at Republican National Conventions in 2004 and 2008.
When he ran for chairman of the national committee, Steele frequently pledged to reach out to minority voters who have largely abandoned the GOP in recent years. And when the race came down to a battle between Steele and former South Carolina GOP Chairman Katon Dawson, who once belonged to an all-white country club, several RNC members cast votes for Steele with racial diversity in mind.
Steele has repeatedly used language apparently aimed at wooing younger black voters, calling the stimulus package passed in February "bling bling" and referring to a joke Obama made a joke in which Obama ribbed the RNC chairman for his supposedly urban attitude as "just good love between two brothers."
The liberal Think Progress blog posted a 2005 interview between Steele and C-SPAN host Brian Lamb in which Steele pushed back against claims made by the Baltimore Sun that all he brought to the gubernatorial ticket was the color of his skin.
Steele called the claim, made in an editorial when he and ex-Gov. Bob Ehrlich (R) ran together in 2002, "pure ignorance," adding that he had been the victim of racist treatment.
Calls and e-mails to the RNC press department were not immediately returned late Friday afternoon.

I wonder what his ratings will be?
Actually, the media loved Obama for his other color--- Red.
Hitlery, you see this?...
Ohhhhhhhhhh...........yessssssssss..........
Steele redeems himself here, somewhat.
The honeymoon is over for Obama and has been for about the last month. Steele is a little late to the party and given his ethnic status, he’s very late. He can’t be called a racist for saying things like this, but if this said by a white chairperson, we would have calls for public flogging within hours, for sure. Steele can say these things and should have said them EARLY and OFTEN.
This is what Steele was hired for. Since he got the job, I think this is the second good thing he’s said. Not a great record.
Well, the truth is refreshing; even from Michael Steele; who can share some truth about Obama; that few in our Party can. . .or would; or will. . .Hope he has an audience.
The media would have torn a black Republican to shreds in the primaries, never mind the general election campaign.
“We can ‘continue to ride around in our limousines and feel so lucky to live in an America with a black president, Steele said, mocking what he sees as a biased media.”
Check this out!
The honorable Reverend Manning:
STE=Q
I think Ø's political philosophy and principles are quite well known. His (ghostwritten) books, the interviews and speeches he gave prior to the election, as well as his associations, made it all very clear.
It's true that the media didn't report most of it, so the average voter, who didn't take the time to educate herself, is clueless. But all the information was available.
Hard-left, racist, totalitarian, a hater of everything America stands for, owned and operated by wealthy oligarchs, determined to destroy America and turn it into a third world country.... It was all out there. You just had to spend the time reading and watching to find it.
I had never seen a coronation before .. what a show it was.
Chairman Steele... we vetted Obama. Obama had a pretty clear record prior to being elected Pres__ent.
You are pointing fingers, Mr. Steele. The Republican Party did not vet this guy either.
Talk about being aware of and effectively dealing with the qualifications, character and behavior of one’s opponent!
With a little luck, our nation may have time for you to get in the game!
Nonsense.
0bama wasn’t vetted because he is a marxists.
Name the last democratic candidate that was vetted.
Hell, none were. Not one.
I think it’s even worse than Steele is letting on. The media seem to feel that they have accomplished something sacred or holy in elevating a black socialist to the presidency. The religious fervor they demonstrate in their allegiance to 0 is a bit unsettling to us regular folks.
Conservatives must take control over the Republican Party. Firstly, and more importantly, Individual freedoms as guaranteed in The Constitution should be the overall premise of what we stand for. The main planks should be: 1) A strong fiscal conservative format based on a balanced budget, 2) A strong national defense, 3) Solid support for states rights including self-determination on social initiatives, (This would eliminate the various divisions within the national party and provide a welcome mat to fiscally conservative members), 4) A fair tax to replace the present tax structure, 5) The Federal Reserve System needs to be reformed, 6) The Country needs to have an adequate manufacturing base to maintain its defense and 7) We need a consistent energy program.
a truer statement was never spoken
Is Steele finally starting to come around?
